A group of RPG creators is crowdfunding a physical book for a memorial megadungeon called Return to Perinthos, dedicated to the late D&D designer Jennell Jaquays. The project aims to cover Jaquays’ medical and funeral expenses, featuring nearly 90 interconnected dungeon levels mirroring her classic Caverns of Thracia. The 200-page book, designed by Luke Gearing, includes a fresh setting and a previously unpublished Q&A with Jaquays. The crowdfunding campaign on Crowdfundr, licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0, allows contributors to use various RPG systems, resulting in an eclectic mix. All proceeds from retail sales will go to Trans Lifeline in honor of Jaquays’ activism. The campaign runs until February 26th, with shipping expected in May.

Evil Genius Games, a tabletop RPG company, experienced a rapid decline from over 20 staff members to just six within a few weeks. The company faced financial troubles despite initial success, with staff working without pay for months. A failed collaboration with Netflix on the Rebel Moon tabletop game, accompanied by a lawsuit and subsequent settlement, contributed to the company’s woes. Internal conflicts arose over the use of controversial Web3 technologies, including AI, blockchain, and NFTs, and disagreements led to resignations and layoffs. Allegations of a toxic work environment, broken promises, and unethical behavior by the CEO were raised by former employees. The company is now seeking to recover with a smaller team and scaled-down ambitions. A crowdfunding campaign for Military Heroes sourcebooks is underway, emphasizing a commitment to avoid using AI or blockchains in their projects.

Board game company CMON LTD and crowdfunding platform Gamefound have entered into an exclusivity deal for tabletop crowdfunding and pledge management. CMON will now host its crowdfunding and preorder campaigns exclusively on Gamefound, marking a significant shift from its previous use of Kickstarter. The move is driven by Gamefound’s features and a desire to enhance the consumer experience. CMON’s current A Song of Ice & Fire: Tactics campaign on Gamefound has already raised over $1 million. Meanwhile, Backerkit, a crowdfunding platform, is gaining traction in tabletop gaming by attracting disenchanted Kickstarter users. Backerkit aims to offer a more intimate and sustainable relationship between backers and creators. The platform has experienced success with tabletop campaigns, managing projects that account for a significant percentage of Kickstarter funds. Backerkit’s CEO, Maxwell Salzberg, envisions crowdfunding as a way for creators to turn their unique projects into a long-term career. 

Pathfinder RPG has partnered with Michael Ghelfi Studios to produce official soundtracks for upcoming Adventure Path releases. Paizo, the studio behind Pathfinder, will collaborate with Michael Ghelfi Studios to create full-length soundtracks for Adventure Paths, enhancing the ambiance of tabletop RPG sessions. The partnership aims to provide players with memorable music associated with key themes, characters, and story beats from their campaigns. The soundtracks will be available for download alongside the Adventure Path volumes and can be streamed on various platforms, including YouTube, Spotify, and Bandcamp. Paizo plans to list the music on popular virtual tabletop programs for online RPG sessions.

The Weekly LIVE 218 – Stormlight RPG, Epic Sellout, Adventure Time 5e, Ring of Chaos and Pathfinder Now D&D-Free

Brandon Sanderson, the bestselling author, has unveiled details about a new tabletop role-playing game called Stormlight. The game features a unique d20-based system with the addition of a “plot die” for risky rolls. It also incorporates a skill-based magic system and allows players to join different factions. Brotherwise Games, Sanderson’s partner, also teased a deck-building game based on Sanderson’s Mistborn novels and a standalone card game called Shards of Creation. The Stormlight RPG will be funded through a Kickstarter campaign in 2024. 

Games Workshop is releasing Legions Imperialis, a 6-millimeter-scale wargame set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The game offers grand strategy battles with multiple infantry and armor units and allows for different unit compositions. However, the small size of the miniatures may lead to challenges in building them, potentially driving players to seek proxy models.

The Adventure Time RPG, which was previously announced to use a custom Yes And rule set, will now use the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition rules instead. The crowdfunding for the game has been delayed until the first part of 2024. The Yes And rule set will still be released as a companion piece, but the main offering will be the 5e RPG. The Adventure Time Card Wars Ultimate Edition is also being crowdfunded and has already surpassed its original goal of $80,000. It is a competitive card game based on the Adventure Time episode “Card Wars”. 

“Ring of Chaos” is a competitive fantasy card and board game where players form parties of heroes and monsters to fight for control of the legendary Ring of Chaos. The game combines elements of TTRPGs, card games, and board games, and offers multiple ways to win. It features original fantasy art and includes various components such as player mats, battle maps, acrylic standees, action cards, and temple guardian cards. There are two editions available: Standard and Platinum, with the Platinum Edition offering additional upgrades such as 3D “Sundrop” minis and specialty printing effects on hero cards. The game is designed by Beadle & Grimm’s and is set in an ancient temple where adventurers from around the world compete to claim the power of the Ring.

Paizo, the publisher of Pathfinder, has released remastered rulebooks for Pathfinder Second Edition in response to proposed changes to the Dungeons & Dragons Open Gaming License (OGL). The remastered rulebooks, Pathfinder Player Core and Pathfinder GM Core, have been modified to avoid future licensing conflicts with Wizards of the Coast. Changes include renaming mechanics and fictional languages, as well as reclassifying character ancestries. Additionally, Paizo has introduced new dragons tied to different sources of magic. Paizo has also created its own alternative to the OGL called the Open RPG Creative (ORC) License to foster collaboration and provide peace of mind to publishers. The remastered rulebooks redefine key elements of D&D, such as replacing alignment with edicts and anathema. The revisions also address criticisms of Pathfinder 2E, including splitting the Core Rulebook into separate versions for players and game masters and updating the character sheet.

The Weekly LIVE 213 – Mythic Games Plays Catchup, Mistborn Leaving, TMNT TTRPG Returns and Candela Obscura Release

Mythic Games, a board game publisher, faced criticism and backlash from the tabletop gaming community due to unfulfilled crowdfunding campaigns. The company, in response, cited internal sacrifices such as selling intellectual properties (IPs) and reducing staff to meet crowdfunding commitments. Backers of projects like “Rainbow Six Siege: The Board Game” and “Darkest Dungeon: The Board Game” were asked for additional payments to cover unexpected expenses attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. The company has faced delays and criticism from backers and industry figures.

Mistborn Adventure Game, a tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) based on Brandon Sanderson’s novels, will no longer be available digitally on DriveThruRPG after December 31, 2023. The Mistborn series is a popular fantasy franchise, and the TTRPG adaptation will be leaving digital stores, creating a time constraint for fans to acquire digital copies.

Palladium Books announced the return of the official Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) roleplaying game, originally published in 1985, through a Kickstarter campaign. The classic TMNT RPG will be republished as two deluxe hardcover collections with new artwork and exclusive Kickstarter items. The campaign is set to launch on October 31, 2023, and will feature miniatures, dice sets, variant book covers, art prints, and other exclusives.

Critical Role’s publishing imprint, Darrington Press, announced the release date for “Candela Obscura,” a horror-themed tabletop roleplaying game. Co-designed by members of the Critical Role team, the game uses the Illuminated Worlds System and is set during the early 20th century. The core rulebook is scheduled for worldwide release on November 14, 2023, and includes rules, character options, campaign details, and exclusive editions. The game follows investigators operating in a world of occult occurrences and mysterious events, with a focus on horror elements.
