The Weekly LIVE 250 – Board game Publishers Scammed, Phantasy Star for Tabletop, Etsy Now Sells AI and Sexist Gary Gygax

Several board game publishers have been deceived by scammers impersonating a Facebook group with 80,000 members. Renegade Games Studios and CrowD Games were among the victims who sent review copies of their latest games to fraudsters pretending to be Thomas Covert, the real social media manager and marketing coordinator for Board Game Revolution (BGR). The scammers contacted publishers with a fake email, claiming that BGR was venturing into reviews. Despite the real Covert’s efforts to alert the industry, Renegade and CrowD had already shipped their games. CrowD’s marketing director, Serge Sintsov, explained that he received a convincing email from the impersonator during a busy period and sent a game before realizing the scam.

Devir Americas narrowly avoided sending their games due to good fortune, as managing partner Matt Hyland explained that their shipment request fell through the cracks. Other publishers like Gamelyn Games and Daily Magic Games were also targeted, with Daily Magic’s David Mackenzie stating they might have sent copies if the scam had not been uncovered in time. Daily Magic is also dealing with a fake Instagram account impersonating their company to access sensitive information. Covert has now hired a private investigator to track the packages sent to various addresses across the U.S. and emphasized that any affected publishers should contact him via the official BGR email.

Skydawn Studios has announced a new tabletop RPG based on the beloved video game series Phantasy Star. On June 29, 2024, Roll20 detected unauthorized access to an administrative account, which was promptly blocked within an hour. An investigation revealed that personal information such as names, email addresses, last known IP addresses, and the last four digits of stored credit cards might have been exposed. However, full payment details and passwords were not compromised. Despite having no evidence of data misuse, Roll20 is notifying users as a precaution and has committed to enhancing their security measures. Users concerned about their data can contact Roll20’s support.

Modiphius Entertainment is moving its UK warehousing and order fulfillment to a new partner, promising cheaper and faster shipping. The transition may cause delays for orders placed after 5 PM BST on July 5. Digital orders and orders from the US store will not be affected. To compensate for delays, a 15% discount is offered on most physical products using the code SHIPPINGDELAY. Pre-orders, especially for Fallout: Factions, will be prioritized to minimize impact.

The Weekly LIVE 248 – Modiphius Acquires Strato Minis, CRIT Awards at GenCon, Caverns of Thracia and Rascal News

Modiphius Entertainment has acquired Strato Minis Studio, a Polish company known for its resin miniatures and games such as Hardwar, Retrobots, and Stratoyager. Modiphius will take over the development of these lines, starting with a re-launch of Hardwar, a 6mm scale miniatures game centered on sci-fi mech, armor, and aerial combat. Modiphius co-founder Chris Birch praised the Strato Minis team for their intricate world-building and expressed plans to expand the game’s audience. The new Hardwar line will be released in stages, including a reprint of the core rules and a free quickstart PDF to help new players.

The CRIT Awards, organized by Ivy, announced on June 24 that their in-person ceremony would not return to Gen Con due to safety concerns. REVIEW – Dune: Adventures in the Imperium RPG – Modiphius 2d20 – After 10 Sessions

Missing one our players (Terry/Tars) on a previous week, we decided to record our thoughts on the current campaign and the Dune RPG itself. Matt and Will joined me for a long in-depth discussion of Dune: Adventures in the Imperium 2d20 RPG by Modiphius. We work our way through every chapter of the core rulebook and also discuss our approach to House and world building. We have already played ten 3-4 hour sessions in our current Dune campaign and have experience in other 2d20 games. This is the unedited version running almost 4 hours.

The Weekly LIVE 247 – Warhammer 5E AP, The Grey Knight for Pendragon 6E, Evil Genius Games Heel Turn and Free RPG Day 2024

The upcoming D&D actual play series, “Heretic Hunt,” merges the worlds of Dungeons & Dragons and Warhammer 40,000, promising a unique blend of medieval fantasy and grim futuristic themes. This series features former Games Workshop presenters Louise Sugden and Chris ‘Peachy’ Peach, alongside Dungeon Master Daniel Saye, actor Greg Jones, and producer-performer Jamila Hall. Set to premiere later this year, it will consist of eight 48-minute episodes featuring miniatures and terrain crafted by the players. Daniel Saye, inspired by Warhammer 40,000’s gritty universe and the street-level narratives of author Dan Abnett, orchestrates the story. The campaign kicks off in the hive city Serrix-2, with a team of Inquisitorial agents disrupting a heretical ritual. The diverse characters, some seasoned and others newly conscripted, focus on saving their immediate surroundings rather than the entire world. The rules are slightly modified to fit the Warhammer 40,000 setting, with elements borrowed from other RPGs to enhance the narrative. The miniatures and terrain, integral to the visual storytelling, are crafted with passion and precision by the team, providing a rich and immersive experience for viewers.

Chaosium’s release of Pendragon 6E includes the revitalized campaign “The Grey Knight,” a classic adventure newly updated for the sixth edition. The campaign spans generations and serves as an excellent introduction to the Pendragon system, featuring prominent Arthurian characters like Arthur, Guenevere, and Merlin. It combines the two prequel scenarios from the Starter Set with the full Grey Knight campaign, offering a comprehensive and engaging experience for new players and game masters.

Evil Genius Games (EGG), known for their Everyday Heroes TTRPG, is under scrutiny for potentially using NFTs and blockchain technology despite previous pledges against such technologies. After multiple staff resignations citing ethical concerns, EGG’s CEO Dave Scott assured the public that the company would avoid these controversial technologies. However, Scott’s recent pitch at Consensus 2024 heavily featured NFTs and blockchain, raising doubts about EGG’s commitment to its earlier promises. The pitch outlined a vision where NFTs would play a significant role in their TTRPG offerings, including character sheets and in-game objects, sparking further controversy and concern among fans and former staff alike.

Similarly, Embracer Group has adopted a new AI policy to enhance game production, aiming to increase efficiency and personalization in gameplay. The company believes that leveraging AI will allow for more engaging and dynamic gaming experiences. However, Embracer acknowledges the risks associated with AI, such as potential ethical and bias issues, and emphasizes a human-centric approach to the technology. The policy aims to empower developers and open opportunities for new hires, while ensuring compliance with comprehensive legal and ethical standards.

Free RPG Day is set for June 22, 2024, offering exclusive RPG adventures, previews, and accessories from top publishers. The event, held at hobby game stores worldwide, provides an opportunity for gamers to explore new games and enjoy a day of roleplaying celebration. The most expensive movie on Netflix, ‘The Electric State,’ is a science fiction film directed by the Russo Brothers, known for their work on ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame.’ The film will cost $320 million, marking it as the platform’s priciest project to date. This move comes as part of Netflix’s strategy to dominate the sci-fi genre amidst the ongoing streaming war, where Apple TV+ currently holds the lead. ‘The Electric State’ stands out among Netflix’s upcoming projects. Wacom has introduced Yuify, a blockchain-based service designed to help digital artists and photographers claim and manage the ownership of their work. Available as a plugin for Adobe Photoshop and soon for Clip Paint Studio and Rebelle, Yuify allows artists to record their work on the blockchain, ensuring control over the legal use of their images through licensing. In an interview at the VFX Festival, Wacom CEO Nobutaka Ide emphasized that Yuify is not about exploiting artists like NFTs but about providing a secure method for artists to authenticate and manage their portfolios. The immutable nature of blockchain technology and self-sovereign identity (SSI) make it ideal for this purpose. Roll20 has acquired Demiplane, a character management and creation toolset, to enhance its virtual tabletop (VTT) platform. This acquisition aims to create a seamless user experience for tabletop RPG players, allowing them to buy RPG content, manage characters, and play games in one place. Roll20 CEO Ankit Lal emphasized the goal of connecting gamers and providing a comprehensive digital toolkit for various game systems. Demiplane’s integration will support new game systems and Kickstarter campaigns with digital options. Demiplane CEO Peter Romenesko mentioned efforts to merge the two platforms’ features. The acquisition won’t immediately impact users, but Demiplane’s development team, minus executive Adam Bradford, will stay intact. Bradford has joined SmiteWorks, the owner of Fantasy Grounds, as Chief Development Officer.

Steamforged Games has acquired the Iron Kingdoms universe, including the Warmachine wargame, Formula P3 paints, and the Iron Kingdoms RPG series, from Privateer Press. This acquisition aims to enhance the gaming experience for players through a collaboration between Steamforged and Privateer Press on design and development. Steamforged, known for its successful game development, plans to transition the range to its website, ensuring a smooth changeover while honoring existing orders. The acquisition is expected to strengthen the miniature gaming community, with continued support for related events and upcoming releases, including a Kickstarter for the Iron Kingdoms RPG.

Meta has confirmed that it uses public Instagram images to train its AI image generator, sparking outrage among users, especially artists. Many are considering leaving Instagram due to this and the platform’s declining reach. Despite the backlash, opting out is complicated and mainly available to EU users. Superstar artist J. Scott Campbell advised artists to remain on major platforms like Instagram for business growth, though he has joined the artist-friendly platform Cara. Cara promises to filter out AI-generated content and offers an alternative for those concerned about AI’s ethical issues. SmiteWorks, the developer behind the virtual tabletop software Fantasy Grounds, has hired Adam Bradford as its Chief Development Officer. Bradford, known for founding D&D Beyond and leading Demiplane, brings significant experience to his new role. At SmiteWorks, he will focus on expanding Fantasy Grounds’ market presence, enhancing user engagement, and improving user experience. Publisher Free League Publishing introduces “Replicant Rebellion,” a new expansion for Blade Runner: The Roleplaying Game. Based on the films and Philip K. Dick’s novel, the game usually casts players as Blade Runners. This expansion, however, recruits them into the Replicant Underground, a group fighting for Replicant freedom. Players will perform various missions, grappling with ethical dilemmas reminiscent of the original 1982 film and its sequel. The expansion, funded via Kickstarter from May 28th, maintains the franchise’s themes of corporate exploitation and empathy for Replicants.

The tactical sci-fi franchise BattleTech celebrates its 40th anniversary with a new edition of the original board game. Set to release on June 12, it features updated box art, eight miniatures, and various game materials. Preorders are available for $60, with discounts on other BattleTech products. The franchise, which began in 1984, has expanded into various media but remains rooted in its tabletop origins.

The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) criticized Adobe’s “skip the photoshoot” ad campaign, accusing it of undermining photographers’ work. In an open letter, ASMP Chair Gabriella Marks emphasized the irreplaceable skill and creativity of photographers, urging Adobe to support the industry rather than diminish it.
