Hasbro recently cancelled a Dungeons and Dragons action game being developed by Giant Skull, the studio led by former Star Wars Jedi director Stig Asmussen, though Giant Skull is currently looking for a new publishing deal. Meanwhile, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks has announced that more D&D crossover products are in the works, drawing inspiration from the success of Magic: The Gathering, and he described the upcoming space opera RPG Exodus as “D&D in space”. Separately, the United Wizards of the Coast union reported that WotC and Hasbro have hired a union avoidance firm and are conducting a daily anti-union campaign via email. Wizards of the Coast launched “Drops,” a new weekly and monthly feature providing content like maps, spells, and feats exclusively for D&D Beyond Hero and Master tier subscribers. While intended as a value-add, Drops content cannot be shared among campaign members using the Master tier subscription—the traditional core benefit of the service—and access is lost if a subscription is cancelled. D&D Beyond executives claim this restriction is a necessary tradeoff to ensure designers are paid, but this shift effectively encourages every player in a group to purchase a minimum Hero Tier subscription to access all player-facing material.

Worlds Beyond Brawl is a campaign showcasing the One Page Rules Compatibility Program by offering over 500 3D printable models across 53 skirmish warbands from 18 miniature companies. All models are fully compatible with One Page Rules’ free games, Grimdark Future: Firefight and Age of Fantasy Skirmish, with custom stats provided on the Army Forge web app. The models are professionally supported and test-printed, available for personal use only, and are delivered to a user’s MyMiniFactory library upon pledging.

Modiphius is running its “Press Start to Play” spring sale for the next 40 days, offering savings of up to 50% on a massive list of RPGs, board games, and accessories. The sale includes major titles such as Fallout: The Roleplaying Game, Star Trek Adventures 2E, and Dune: Adventures in the Imperium, as well as a large collection of Fallout miniatures. Dungeon Scrawl launched a free, instant, and browser-based map generator for TTRPGs that requires no installation or account. This easy-to-use mapmaking app is presented as a solution for Game Masters who need maps quickly during a session or a starting point for a new project. The feature uses procedural generation (not AI) to instantly create fully explorable, gridded dungeon maps. Users can customize the results by adjusting input criteria such as overall map size, layout style, room count, room size and shape, and corridor length and width.Every map generated is fully editable. Finished maps can be exported for use on any Virtual Tabletop (VTT), or they can be printed or broadcast to a TV/monitor using the “Send to Tabletop” tool for in-person games. The Random Dungeons feature is currently available in beta.

Free RPG Day 2026 will take place on June 27th, featuring 30 unique tabletop RPG publishers and accessory makers who will provide free modules, quick start guides, and accessories to participating Friendly Local Game Stores. Publishers participating this year include Paizo (with a Pathfinder 2E and Starfinder 2E adventure), Chaosium, Darrington Press (with a Daggerheart adventure), and Marvel (with a Multiverse RPG preview). The goal is to raise awareness of the TTRPG hobby, and customers are advised to use the official store locator and show up early due to limited inventory.

Paizo, which has focused exclusively on Pathfinder and Starfinder for the past 25 years, is launching a new rules-lite, modern, supernatural horror TTRPG called 13 Omens. The game is designed by Paizo veterans Jason Bulmahn and Joe Pasini, and it is set in a dark reflection of our world beset by horrifying specters, bloodthirsty killers, and cursed places. Although few mechanical details are currently available, the description of it being “rules-lite” suggests the game will not use the Pathfinder 2E system as a base.

The Dungeon Crawler Carl TTRPG from Renegade Game Studios is making history by becoming the most-followed TTRPG launch in crowdfunding, raising over $5.3 million in its first 24 hours on BackerKit. The game adapts the popular LitRPG novel series by Matt Dinniman, which chronicles the adventures of Carl and his sapient cat, Princess Donut, as they are forced to compete in a hyper-violent, 18-level World Dungeon broadcast to an intergalactic audience. The TTRPG uses a skill-based D20 system where players can choose from over 30 species and unique classes like Shotgun Messenger, and players roll all the dice while the Gamemaster takes on the role of the System AI.

Cthulhu, the terrifying entity created by H.P. Lovecraft, is officially entering the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse via the upcoming 5.5e supplement, Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, which is set for release in June. The ultimate eldritch monster will be a Darklord for a new Domain of Dread known as Innsmouth and will receive a complete stat block, lore, and associated magic items. While Cthulhu was briefly included in the 1980 AD\&D *Deities & Demigods* supplement before being removed due to a copyright dispute, this release marks his triumphant, official return to core D\&D content.

Free League Publishing is marking the 10th anniversary of its dark fantasy RPG Symbaroum with a new Kickstarter launching on May 19th. The campaign will feature a revised core rulebook set, which reorganizes the original content into three books, alongside a brand new campaign setting called City States of Vendilyn – A Ravaged Realm. The new setting details a realm devastated by the malevolent elves of Duskwood. Symbaroum is known for its gritty and deadly gameplay that uses a D20 roll-under core mechanic.

Wizards of the Coast (WotC) is signaling a massive strategic shift toward outsourcing the development of official *Dungeons & Dragons* content to third-party publishers, as evidenced by a recent job post for a “TRPG Publishing Lead”. This role is explicitly tasked with overseeing “externally developed D\&D content, including adventures, campaign materials, guides, and artwork”. This change follows internal team restructuring, the adoption of a holistic D&D franchise model, and WotC’s recent decision to actively feature third-party products on D\&D Beyond. Although WotC has previously worked with third-party designers for early D&D 5E supplements like “Hoard of the Dragon Queen” and “Princes of the Apocalypse” The practice was largely abandoned in 2016, making this an important new chapter in the company’s relationship with outside publishers.

Paizo’s Pathfinder launched a new subscription service called Paizo Printables on April 2, offering 3D printable miniature files and accompanying TTRPG content. The service provides two monthly subscription tiers—$4.99 and $9.99—with the higher tier including a welcome pack of 25 minis, a monthly themed pack, and digital rulebooks. Associate publisher Thurston Hillman stated that the primary goal is accessibility, bypassing the delays of physical production, and the new format offers Paizo the freedom to create niche, setting-specific miniatures. Ultimately, Paizo aims to use the platform to introduce exclusive rules content and new ancestries to the game in the future.

A new physical and digital bundle is available for the Dune – Adventures in the Imperium RPG by Modiphius, with a portion of the proceeds supporting the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The physical bundle includes the *Agents of Dune Deluxe Starter Set*, the Atreides collector’s edition of the *Dune: Core Rulebook*, and an Arrakis-themed dice set. Most of the titles offered in the physical bundle seem to be sold out as of this post.

The Kickstarter campaign for LOWLIFE: A DUNGEON DEGENERATES ROLE PLAYING GAME, by Sean Äaberg and Goblinko, is currently live and heading toward its funding goal. The project is a major expansion of the Dungeon Degenerates: Hand of Doom board game world, creating a full TTRPG described as “Grand Theft Auto meets Game of Thrones” and focused on “low drama” stories of survival in the dark fantasy continent of Bödengärd. The game utilizes a customized Old School Renaissance (OSR) engine with a d20 roll-low mechanic and features simultaneous, deadly combat. Key mechanics include tracking “Meat & Morale” as a combined resource—where the spirit often breaks before the body—and using “Heat” to track the players’ wanted level with local authorities. Core reward tiers include the *LowLife Core RPG Book*, the Doomed Life expansion (to bridge the RPG and board game), and world guides.

Blades ’68 is an official 450-page expansion for the TTRPG Blades in the Dark. This supplement advances the timeline 100 years to the “Swinging Sixties” in the city of Doskvol, an age of electroplasmic fusion and “Bluetime” spy games. The expansion introduces new playbooks, crews, and a revamped setting, alongside new rules for Harm, Resistance, Keys, Deadlocks, and an adapted Trouble Engine. The campaign has been overwhelmingly funded, with an expected delivery date of August 2026.

Paizo, the publisher of Pathfinder, announced the new Pathfinder Beginner Box: Secrets of the Unlit Star, an all-inclusive entry point to Pathfinder Second Edition set for release on May 6th, 2026. The box set features a solo adventure, a 72-page Hero’s Handbook, an 88-page Game Master’s Guide, and updated rules for character options and adventure scenarios. Additionally, Paizo confirmed its commitment to the Pathfinder 2E Remaster with the release of Dark Archive Remastered and the announcement of Season of Ghosts Remastered. The company also partnered with One Page Rules to launch Paizo Printables, a new line of 3D printable wargaming miniature STLs compatible with the Age of Fantasy system, starting in Spring 2026.

Maestro Media unveiled Avatar: Pandora’s Power, a two-player asymmetric lane-battling card game based on the Avatar films. The game pits the resource-extractive RDA against the adaptive, land-rooted Na’vi factions, with the goal of reaching 30 points to decide Pandora’s fate. CEO Javon Frazier emphasized that the core experience is the asymmetry, with each faction playing a distinctly different game. Designed for ages 12 and up, the game plays in approximately 20-45 minutes and includes 170 Faction Cards, 18 Location Cards, and various tokens.

Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks touted the company’s AI integration as a “clear success” during a recent earnings call, though he primarily referred to its deployment in non-creative, operational workflows such as financial planning, supply chains, and general productivity. Cocks stated that AI, in partnership with platforms like Google Gemini and OpenAI, is expected to free up over 1 million hours of lower-value work within the year. While he maintains a “human-centric creator-led approach,” Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has an explicit policy prohibiting its artists and writers from using generative AI for final D&D products, a stance that aligns with a user survey indicating over 60% of consumers would not buy D&D products made with AI.

Paizo has unveiled *Starfinder Galactic Ancestries*, an upcoming 224-page rulebook for *Starfinder Second Edition*, scheduled for release in April 2026 at an MSRP of $69.95. This expansion will introduce 21 brand new playable alien ancestries, such as the worlanisi, bantrid, and novian, alongside expanded options for existing Starfinder species like Vesk and Shirren. The book also provides Starfinder updates for classic fantasy ancestries including elves, gnomes, and goblins. A new official Cyberpunk 2077 trading card game, titled *Cyberpunk TCG*, has been announced by CD Projekt Red and Weird Co. A hype trailer was released on December 9th, coinciding with the fifth anniversary of *Cyberpunk 2077*. The game will draw heavily on the aesthetics and characters of both *Cyberpunk 2077* and the *Cyberpunk: Edgerunners* anime, featuring Legends like Jackie Welles and Judy Alvarez, as well as V and Johnny Silverhand. Developed by a team with experience on games like *Marvel Snap* and *Universus*, the TCG is designed to be accessible to new players while offering depth for enthusiasts, with a crowdfunding campaign slated for 2026.

A massive month-long sale is currently running on DriveThruRPG for the *Fallout RPG* line from Modiphius. Steamforged Games announced a significant price reduction (a $101/£74/€88 subsidy) for the Town Founder Pledge of the Terra Mystica Special Edition on Gamefound, lowering the price from $389 to $288, based on community feedback that the original price was too high for the full five-expansion bundle. The campaign is already highly funded.

IDW Games is releasing the first-ever tabletop RPG for the Godzilla franchise, titled Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game. It is being developed by former Warhammer legends Jervis Johnson, Mark Latham, and Gav Thorpe. The game is set in the “Kai-Sei Era” from the IDW comics and focuses on players joining G-Force to stop kaiju attacks. Notably, the system will be completely diceless, using a standard 52-card playing deck for mechanics. A Kickstarter launches in March 2026, with previews at PAX Unplugged.

Pinball Crawl Classics (Goodman Games): Goodman Games has licensed classic 1970s and 1980s pinball machine brands to create Dungeon Crawl Classics (DCC RPG) adventures. The Pinball Crawl Classics boxed set will feature five adventures based on the plots of pinball machines like Gorgar, Centaur, Swords of Fury, Embryon, and Cosmic Gunfight. The product will be offered via crowdfunding in January 2026.

New Paizo Store Launch: Paizo is launching a new e-commerce store powered by Big Commerce, replacing their proprietary system. Paizo.com will go offline at 8 a.m. Pacific on Monday, November 10th, for an expected 2-3 day transition. Users will need to reset their passwords for the new store and verify their payment methods, addresses, downloads, and Paizo Plus reward tiers after the launch.

Paranoia: Five Clones from Alpha Complex (Miniatures Wargame): A preorder announcement for a new tabletop miniatures adventure wargame based on the Paranoia RPG, titled Paranoia: Five Clones from Alpha Complex. It is described as an “uncooperative” game with procedural group play and a Solo Mode, featuring secret societies, mutant powers, and 20 scenarios. Preorders are also open for a related range of Paranoia: Miniatures.

Diamond Comic Distributors has initiated adversary proceedings against 31 consignment vendors, ranging from Ablaze LLC to Zenescope Entertainment, Inc., to seize and sell their consignment inventory held in Diamond’s warehouse. This action follows a bankruptcy court order requiring individual proceedings against each vendor. Major publishers involved include Titan Comics, Paizo Inc., Oni Press, Goodman Games, Fantagraphics Books, Dynamite Entertainment, DSTLRY, Dark Horse Comics, and BOOM! Entertainment. Concurrently, consignment publishers are seeking access to $1.57 million generated from unauthorized sales of their inventory by Sparkle Pop, the company that acquired Diamond Comic Distributors’ assets.

Sparkle Pop has responded to Diamond’s motion regarding its sales of consignment inventory, claiming that these sales occurred due to Diamond’s inaction and that they have ceased selling the inventory prior to Diamond’s motion. Sparkle Pop alleges that Diamond failed to remove consignment inventory listings from the website and co-mingled the inventory in its warehouse. They state that they continued to fill orders out of concern for liability for damages if orders were not fulfilled and inventory value declined, and are currently holding the $1.57 million in funds from these sales, awaiting a court decision on who should be paid. Sparkle Pop also argues that Diamond is obligated to pay over $433,000 in shipping and other costs incurred by Sparkle Pop to fulfill these orders. Both the Ad Hoc Committee of Consignors and The Consignment Group have filed objections to Diamond’s motion against Sparkle Pop, requesting the court to protect the proceeds of the sales until the ownership dispute is resolved.

The Pathfinder Abomination Vaults Adventure Path, originally from Paizo, has been adapted for D&D Beyond in a 5th Edition (5E) version. This “megadungeon” campaign, taking players from levels 1-11, is now available digitally on D&D Beyond. The campaign delves into the mysterious Gauntlight lighthouse and the sprawling Abomination Vaults, where players confront monsters and traps created by a wicked sorcerer. The 5E adaptation includes 13 digital maps, 16 new magic items, and 6 new adventure-specific spells. The release on D&D Beyond, announced at Gen Con 2025, coincides with D&D Beyond’s integrated virtual tabletop Maps becoming free for all users on September 16th, making it easier for Dungeon Masters to run the campaign with minimal prep. Comments on Paizo’s blog indicate interest and positive experiences with running Pathfinder content using D&D 5E and Savage Worlds systems.

The Weekly LIVE 299 – Warframe Starfinder, Hellfire Club 5E, One Ring Starter and Critical Role Game

Warframe is making its tabletop debut through a collaboration between Digital Extremes and Paizo, bringing the popular video game to the Starfinder Second Edition rules system. “Operation Orias” launches in October as a standalone adventure where players take on the roles of Tenno characters, facing off against iconic Warframe enemies like the Corpus and Grineer. The adventure is designed for 4-6 hours of gameplay and includes premade characters, setting primers, and customization advice, all adapted specifically for tabletop play.

Stranger Things is getting another D&D crossover with “Welcome to the Hellfire Club,” releasing October 7th. This new starter set presents Eddie Munson’s final campaign and uses D&D 5th Edition rules in a more board game-like format with tokens and cards for easier accessibility. Priced at $49.99 for the physical version ($19.99 digital), it’s positioned as a beginner-friendly entry point that leans heavily into ’80s nostalgia and includes both classic D&D monsters and Stranger Things-specific creatures like demodogs and a new demodragon.

The Lord of the Rings tabletop RPGs are launching new starter sets on July 31st during Gen Con 2025. Free League Publishing is releasing starter sets for both “The One Ring” and “The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying 5E,” each priced at $29.99. These sets include the complete adventure “Over Hill and Under Hill,” custom dice, illustrated standees, pre-generated characters, and maps of Eriador, designed to welcome both newcomers and returning players to Middle-earth adventures set between Bilbo’s journey and the events of The Lord of the Rings.

Critical Role is expanding into video games through a partnership with AdHoc Studio. The collaboration includes two projects: contributing to AdHoc’s superhero workplace comedy game “Dispatch” (releasing later in 2025) and developing Critical Role’s first original video game set in their Exandria world. The Exandria game is still in early development with a timeline of a couple years, aiming for a narrative choice-based experience that could feature characters from their various campaigns in a brand-new storyline set between their main campaigns.

The Weekly Podcast no.297 – Degenesis Cancelled, MAC Attack, McD&D and Dirty Diamond

CMON, already struggling financially with a $3 million loss last year, suffered another major setback when its Gamefound campaign for Degenesis: Clan Wars was cancelled due to a legal dispute with IP holder SixMoreVodka. The German design studio terminated its contract with CMON after what began as a collaborative relationship deteriorated into legal battles, with both parties providing conflicting accounts of the breakdown. CMON has promised full refunds to the campaign’s 1,200 backers, though the refund process won’t begin until after legal resolution.

MAC Attack is a sci-fi miniature wargame by by Chris MacDowall where players command Mobile Armour Colossus (MAC) units and auxiliary units (AUs) in tactical combat across diverse terrain types including Open, Rough, Cover, Water, Obstructions, Barriers, and Buildings on a typical 48″x36″ battlefield. The game uses six-sided dice for general actions and specialized dice for Motion, Heat, Jolt, and Rad weapons, with MACs requiring careful Heat management to avoid overheating while maintaining Motion ratings that affect hit probability. Combat unfolds through four phases—Move, Attack, Meltdown, and Cooldown—with a card-based initiative system determining activation order, while players must strategically balance weapon usage (categorized by range, type, and power levels 1-4) against Heat generation. Forces must include at least 3 MACs and up to 1 AU formation per MAC, with AUs serving as supporting infantry or vehicle units that are always Motion 2, class 0, and destroyed by a single hit, while faction selection provides access to special rules and modules for tactical advantage.

Wizards of the Coast has restructured Dungeons & Dragons under a new “franchise model” led by former Halo veteran Dan Ayoub. This organizational change consolidates all D&D-related properties—books, video games, film, and TV—under one roof, promising a more coordinated and well-funded approach to the franchise. The gaming industry continues to navigate these challenges while seeking alternative distribution channels and legal remedies to protect their businesses.

The tabletop gaming industry is facing significant disruption due to Diamond Comic Distributors’ Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in January 2025. This bankruptcy has severely impacted over 100 independent publishers who relied on Diamond for book trade distribution to major retailers like Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and other bookstores. Diamond is attempting to claim ownership of millions of dollars worth of consigned inventory from publishers through a legal technicality, despite the publishers retaining ownership of unsold stock. Several publishers are taking different approaches to survive the crisis. Green Ronin Publishing has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $9,000 for legal defense costs, having already raised over $6,600 from 101 donations. The company faces particular challenges with upcoming Gen Con expenses and the loss of book trade distribution for key licensed games like The Fifth Season and The Expanse RPGs. Meanwhile, Paizo has stopped shipping products to Diamond entirely, meaning their August and September releases won’t be available through major bookstores or Amazon.
