Evil Genius Games is suing Netflix for allegedly backing out of a deal to create a tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) based on Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon movie. Evil Genius Games claims they delivered the game and related materials but Netflix canceled the contract and asserted ownership of the intellectual property without fair compensation.

BackerKit, a crowdfunding platform, announced a policy against AI-generated content on its platform, citing concerns about fair compensation and permission issues. The policy will restrict solely AI-generated content, but AI-assisted tools in editing and refinement will still be allowed. Essen Spiel, the world’s largest board game expo, admitted to using AI-generated artwork in promotional material for its 2023 event. The admission follows public criticism of other companies using AI-generated art, such as FryxGames and Stronghold Games for Terraforming Mars.

Osprey Games announced a new entry in the Undaunted board game series called “Undaunted 2200: Callisto,” moving away from World War II settings to sci-fi mech battles on Jupiter’s moon Callisto.

Penguin Random House will cease distributing Dungeons & Dragons products in mainstream bookstores from 2024. The distribution responsibility will shift to other distributors like Alliance, Diamond, and GTS.

Johan Nohr, the artist behind MÖRK BORG, launched a Kickstarter campaign for an art book containing over 300 illustrations, annotations, and behind-the-scenes content. The book will showcase Nohr’s artwork since the release of MÖRK BORG in 2019 and will be a large coffee table book with high-quality printing.

The Weekly LIVE 198 – Call of Duty Kickstarter, Final ORC License, Pendragon Starter Set and Buttons & Bugs

The Weekly LIVE 196 – Conan Leaves Modiphius, Dreams and Machines, Gloomhaven Grand Festival and Renegade Studios Ceasing & Desisting

Modiphius is holding a clearance sale before transferring the license for the Conan Roleplaying Game to Monolith. All physical and digital content from Modiphius will be discontinued on June 30th. While many physical books for the game have sold out, PDF copies of all the books are still available. The Conan Roleplaying Game has been well-received with various supplements and accessories released alongside the core rules. There is also a Quickstart Adventure available for those interested.

Modiphius, known for their official tabletop RPGs for Dune, Fallout, and Star Trek, is venturing into a new concept called Dreams and Machines. This post-apocalyptic sci-fi RPG aims to attract curious players with a starter set, making it more accessible. Pre-orders for Dreams and Machines are open on Modiphius’ website, and the game will be showcased at Gen Con 2023. The TRPG is set on a planet isolated from Earth due to a devastating robotic uprising, where society is slowly rebuilding while living in fear of dormant mecha known as Wakers.

Cephlofair Games has launched a significant crowdfunding campaign called the “Gloomhaven Grand Festival” to fund multiple Gloomhaven-related projects. This includes a new edition of Gloomhaven, a Gloomhaven Roleplaying Game, and a comprehensive miniatures set. The campaign has already raised over $1 million, surpassing half of its $2 million goal. Gloomhaven is a highly acclaimed campaign-style board game known for its dungeon-crawling gameplay. A Kickstarter campaign for its sequel, Frosthaven, previously held the record as the most-funded tabletop Kickstarter, raising nearly $13 million.

Renegade Game Studios, which produces licensed TTRPGs like Transformers, GI Joe, and Vampire: The Masquerade, has issued a cease and desist letter to a small creator using the word “renegade.” The Polyhedral Knights had a Kickstarter campaign for their game called ‘Renegade City,’ which is a tabletop RPG centered around playing criminals using dominoes instead of dice. Renegade Game Studios’ claim to the word ‘renegade’ has sparked controversy and may result in unintended negative consequences, known as the Streisand Effect. The Polyhedral Knights received a letter from Renegade Game Studios’ lawyers demanding the removal of the word ‘Renegade’ from their game’s title.

The Weekly LIVE 150 – Darkest Dungeon Dispute, RiotOnline Closes, Return to Dark Tower Second Printing and Expansion and Cthulhu App in Japan

The Darkest Dungeon boardgame Wave 1, the English language core game, is printed and ready ship. Unfortunately for Mythic, the company that designed the boardgame, which is based on the PC game by Red Hook Studios, the costs of shipping have dramatically increased. They are now asking backers to contribute a small additional amount to help make up for the $875K difference after they have already added over a million themselves in cooperation with Red Hook. Of course the comments and criticism are flying. This is putting Mythic in a tight spot. These addition costs are unforeseen and as Kickstarter is NOT a preorder, it seems they are justified in asking for this additional funding. It is either that or just dump the whole thing in the China Sea so they can stop paying storage costs.

A surprise message from DriveThruRPG informed us that due to the closure of RiotOnline we are being sent complimentary codes for PDFs of all the materials we had on this digital platform. This situation comes hot on the heels of Astral announcing they are done. RiotMinds is selling their IP catalog to CMON games. This includes Trudvang Chronicles, LexOccultum, and the Ruin Masters brands. Who knows what CMON will do with them. They do have a studio dedicated to TTRPGs so let’s hope for the best.

Restoration Games is returning to their successful reboot of Dark Tower with a seconding printing of Return to Dark Tower. It will also include a new expansion called Covenant that will include new heroes and mechanics. They are already near $1 million on the second printing this time on Backerkit. If you missed it the first time around this gives you a chance to get the game and for those that pledge it offers the chance to get some of the premium upgrades offered in the first Kickstarter campaign.

Finally, Kadokawa the publisher of Call of Cthulhu in Japan has announced a new smartphone app tentatively named Cthulhu Myth TRPG Rulebook PLUS. It will offer for the first time a single place to access all the books produced over the past 40 years for Call of Cthulhu in Japan. It will immediately only be available to iOS on iPhones but that could change depending on popularity. The app allows users to mark pages and add notes. It is free and offers the books as in-app purchases.

The Weekly 077: Metal Gear Solid: The Boardgame Cancelled, New Never Going Home and Legend of the Five Rings LCG Ends

IDW Games will no longer publish the Metal Gear Solid boardgame. This means the designer also loses the license for the IP from Konami. This leaves more than 2,000 pre-orders on BackerKit and Amazon in limbo. The Legend of the Five Rings Living Card Game by Fantasy Flight is coming to an end. This doesn’t affect the RPG or novels they will continue to support. Wet Ink Games has released three new dossiers for their weird World War I game, Never Going Home.
