CMON, already struggling financially with a $3 million loss last year, suffered another major setback when its Gamefound campaign for Degenesis: Clan Wars was cancelled due to a legal dispute with IP holder SixMoreVodka. The German design studio terminated its contract with CMON after what began as a collaborative relationship deteriorated into legal battles, with both parties providing conflicting accounts of the breakdown. CMON has promised full refunds to the campaign’s 1,200 backers, though the refund process won’t begin until after legal resolution.

MAC Attack is a sci-fi miniature wargame by by Chris MacDowall where players command Mobile Armour Colossus (MAC) units and auxiliary units (AUs) in tactical combat across diverse terrain types including Open, Rough, Cover, Water, Obstructions, Barriers, and Buildings on a typical 48″x36″ battlefield. The game uses six-sided dice for general actions and specialized dice for Motion, Heat, Jolt, and Rad weapons, with MACs requiring careful Heat management to avoid overheating while maintaining Motion ratings that affect hit probability. Combat unfolds through four phases—Move, Attack, Meltdown, and Cooldown—with a card-based initiative system determining activation order, while players must strategically balance weapon usage (categorized by range, type, and power levels 1-4) against Heat generation. Forces must include at least 3 MACs and up to 1 AU formation per MAC, with AUs serving as supporting infantry or vehicle units that are always Motion 2, class 0, and destroyed by a single hit, while faction selection provides access to special rules and modules for tactical advantage.

Wizards of the Coast has restructured Dungeons & Dragons under a new “franchise model” led by former Halo veteran Dan Ayoub. This organizational change consolidates all D&D-related properties—books, video games, film, and TV—under one roof, promising a more coordinated and well-funded approach to the franchise. The gaming industry continues to navigate these challenges while seeking alternative distribution channels and legal remedies to protect their businesses.

The tabletop gaming industry is facing significant disruption due to Diamond Comic Distributors’ Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in January 2025. This bankruptcy has severely impacted over 100 independent publishers who relied on Diamond for book trade distribution to major retailers like Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and other bookstores. Diamond is attempting to claim ownership of millions of dollars worth of consigned inventory from publishers through a legal technicality, despite the publishers retaining ownership of unsold stock. Several publishers are taking different approaches to survive the crisis. Green Ronin Publishing has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $9,000 for legal defense costs, having already raised over $6,600 from 101 donations. The company faces particular challenges with upcoming Gen Con expenses and the loss of book trade distribution for key licensed games like The Fifth Season and The Expanse RPGs. Meanwhile, Paizo has stopped shipping products to Diamond entirely, meaning their August and September releases won’t be available through major bookstores or Amazon.

Many fans of Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) who preordered the 2024 Player’s Handbook recently had their orders canceled without a clear explanation. Customers reported receiving emails stating their payment didn’t go through, even though some had been charged. The issue primarily affected those who paid via PayPal, particularly for the physical copies of the game. Wizards of the Coast (WotC), which had promoted preorders for months, is aware of the problem. DnD community manager LaTia Jacquise asked affected customers to file support tickets, and some have received emails promising to resolve the issue. With the release date of September 17 fast approaching, many fans are anxious about whether they will receive their books on time or if they’ll lose their preorder discounts.

A fundraiser has been set up for Paul Sawyer, a well-known figure in the wargaming community, who was diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastoma. His family is seeking to make his final months as comfortable as possible by raising money for necessary disability aids and home adaptations. Paul, a legend in the wargaming world, is widely remembered for his contributions to White Dwarf magazine and his role at Warlord Games. The GoFundMe page, created by his daughter, Holly Sawyer, has received overwhelming support, with many sharing fond memories of Paul’s influence on their hobby.

The creators of the popular tabletop RPG TEETH, Jim Rossignol and Marsh Davies, have announced their next project, GOLD TEETH. This piracy and occult horror-themed RPG is set in the Caribbean in 1781, blending supernatural dangers with naval combat and adventure. With its Kickstarter launching soon, GOLD TEETH promises to be a visually engaging and grotesque addition to the tabletop gaming world.

Warlord Games has announced the launch of their first board game Kickstarter, Vanguard: Normandy, set for release on October 1st. Developed by the Bolt Action team, the game offers a one-to-four-player World War II experience. With a dice activation system and epic-scale miniatures, the game brings variety through its hex-map-based battlefields. Players can enjoy a dedicated solo-play mode, making it ideal for both solo and multiplayer sessions. While the miniatures don’t require assembly or painting, some players expressed disappointment with prototype quality, particularly with the infantry and tank models. Fans are looking forward to seeing improvements as the campaign moves forward.

The Expanse Roleplaying Game: Transport Union Edition by Green Ronin Publishing is a new edition that expands the RPG universe set between Babylon’s Ashes and Persepolis Rising. The campaign offers an updated core rulebook, additional supplements, miniatures, and accessories. Newcomers can enjoy easy-to-learn gameplay, while veterans will find enhanced character options, spaceships, and adversaries. The 30-year gap between novels provides rich material for storytelling. The campaign includes early backer bonuses, and various pledge tiers offer everything from physical books to virtual tabletop (VTT) support. Green Ronin also introduced miniatures, expanding the immersive RPG experience with customizable Expanse crew and spaceship models.

Chaosium Inc. has announced the return of ElfQuest: The Roleplaying Game, in collaboration with the comic series’ creators, Wendy and Richard Pini. First released in 1984, the RPG uses the Basic Roleplaying System (BRP) and will be reissued as part of Chaosium’s Classic series. The re-release will include the original artwork by Wendy Pini and all the 1984 supplements. A Kickstarter campaign will launch in October 2024 to commemorate the game’s 40th anniversary, aiming to reintroduce ElfQuest to both old and new fans.

The Fantasy AGE Core Rulebook will introduce the game’s second edition when Green Ronin Publishing releases it next month.

Paizo runs out of  core rulebooks until April 2023 after being bombarded with Weeks’ Worth of Orders During OGL 1.1 Battle.

Kobold Press thanks Wizards of the Coast for listening to the community and responding by releasing the SRD 5.1 into Creative Commons. This change ensures that 5E remains available to everyone, including Kobold Press.First, Project Black Flag is going forward. Their timeline is unchanged. The first phase of playtesting releases at the end of February 2023.

Cubicle 7 are developing an upcoming tabletop RPG called Broken Weave, which will contain an early look at their newly developed rules system – C7d20, which will be compatible with Dungeons & Dragons 5E, or rather that edition’s System Reference Document (SRD) 5.1 that Wizards of the Coast released under a Creative Commons license.

Goodman Games announced that January 2023 was the best sales month in its two-decade history. Sales through the Goodman Games online store reached an all-time high, exceeding even prior Black Friday and holiday special events, while other channels saw similar growth. Dungeon Crawl Classics core rulebooks moved at a brisk pace throughout the month, as several accessories and adventure modules sold out.

Gamefound fell short of its goals in 2022, but still ate into Kickstarter’s lead in tabletop.

Marcin Świerkot, founder of the upstart crowdfunding platform Gamefound, set an ambitious goal for his company in 2022. He and his team hoped to bring in $67.5 million — 25% of competitor Kickstarter’s revenue from tabletop projects in 2021. In the end, he fell well short of that goal. The Poland-based Gamefound increased its revenue more than 45% last year, earning just $28.3 million for new projects.
