Many fans of Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) who preordered the 2024 Player’s Handbook recently had their orders canceled without a clear explanation. Warlord Games has announced the launch of their first board game Kickstarter, Vanguard: Normandy, set for release on October 1st. Green Ronin also introduced miniatures, expanding the immersive RPG experience with customizable Expanse crew and spaceship models.

Chaosium Inc. has announced the return of ElfQuest: The Roleplaying Game, in collaboration with the comic series’ creators, Wendy and Richard Pini. First released in 1984, the RPG uses the Basic Roleplaying System (BRP) and will be reissued as part of Chaosium’s Classic series. The re-release will include the original artwork by Wendy Pini and all the 1984 supplements. A Kickstarter campaign will launch in October 2024 to commemorate the game’s 40th anniversary, aiming to reintroduce ElfQuest to both old and new fans.

Plasmodics is an upcoming post-apocalyptic, gonzo sci-fi tabletop roleplaying game, currently seeking funding on Kickstarter. The game centers on creating mutant characters in a bizarre, flooded future world called King Tide. Players can choose from various origins, such as humans, robots, animals, or aliens, and customize their characters with a range of mutations and nuances that alter their physical, mental, and metaphysical abilities. Wizards of the Coast is teaming up with New Holland Brewing Company to celebrate Dungeons & Dragons’ 50th anniversary. They are releasing a limited-edition D20 Brew Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout and an Origin Mead Cask Bourbon Whiskey as part of New Holland’s Dragon Milk line. Pre-orders for merchandise, including wearables and glassware, will launch this week on the Dragon’s Milk website, while the beverages will be available starting in November 2024. The new edition includes fresh content, such as five new adventures, along with updates from its French translation. Set in a post-apocalyptic, prehistoric world, the game offers simple, action-packed gameplay based on a 2d6 system and features careers instead of skills to define character capabilities. The Kickstarter offers two pledge tiers, and no AI tools were used in the game’s development.

The D&D Beyond digital toolset, a crucial platform for many Dungeons & Dragons players, is undergoing significant changes that may complicate its use before improvements are realized. Following Hasbro’s acquisition of the toolset in April 2022, it has become a central hub for 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons, especially as more users transitioned to digital platforms during the pandemic. The upcoming transition from the 2014 to the 2024 version of the Player’s Handbook involves complex steps to maintain compatibility between the old and new rules, including the need to manually recreate some spells and magic items from the 2014 ruleset to function with the new digital character sheets. Wizards of the Coast has faced backlash for this approach, leading them to reconsider and allow players the option to continue using older versions of spells and items without forcing updates. In response to the outcry, Wizards of the Coast has announced that they will not automatically update character sheets with the new rules, preserving the existing content while adding the 2024 rules as optional updates. This change has been welcomed by the community, as it restores player choice in how they interact with the toolset and the game’s evolving rules.

In a related development, Wizards of the Coast has also expanded its partnerships with third-party content creators, bringing new content to the D&D Beyond Marketplace. This includes collaborations with companies like Free League Publishing, Kobold Press, and others, offering a broader range of resources for players and Dungeon Masters alike. These partnerships indicate a continued effort to enrich the D&D Beyond platform with diverse content from across the tabletop role-playing game industry.

“Start Here RPG” is designed as an easy-to-learn and streamlined tabletop roleplaying game, created by veteran game designer Tim Beach. The game is intended for both newcomers and experienced players who find traditional RPG rulebooks overwhelming. With rules that can be learned in just a few minutes, “Start Here” allows players to quickly jump into the gameplay without the need for extensive preparation.

The game system is straightforward, with characters defined by six attributes that directly influence dice rolls and outcomes in the game, making it intuitive and minimizing the need for complex rules. The “Start Here” RPG consists of a trio of books that guide players through the basics of roleplaying and gradually introduce more complex concepts. The first book is tailored for beginners, offering simple rules, sample characters, and an introductory fantasy setting called “Serpents & Strongholds.” The second book expands on the rules, providing more character options, leveling-up mechanics, and a science fiction setting called “Star Ex.” The third book, “Campaign Sampler,” delves deeper into different settings, including a zombie-apocalypse scenario “Zombiesaurus Rex” and a Western-themed “Wizards & Wranglers,” offering more adventure ideas and campaign details. Tim Beach, who has over 30 years of experience in the RPG industry, created “Start Here” to fill the need for an accessible yet complete roleplaying game. The project is a passion endeavor, developed over several years, with support from other editors, authors, and artists. The game aims to offer a fun, easy, and immersive roleplaying experience without the complexity of traditional RPGs.

Gav Thorpe, a renowned Warhammer 40,000 author and designer, has joined the design team for Warlord Games’ alternate-history World War 2 wargame, Konflikt ‘47. Thorpe is known for his extensive work on multiple editions of Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Fantasy Battles, as well as for authoring numerous Warhammer novels. His addition to the Konflikt ‘47 team, led by Andy Chambers, marks another ex-Games Workshop great joining the project. Thorpe, who is passionate about World War 2 games and alternate history, expressed excitement about contributing to Konflikt ‘47, a game that blends WW2 with weird-science elements. Recently, Warlord Games has also brought on board other notable figures, including Cam Rogers, a narrative lead with experience in the videogame industry, and William “Bill” King, a prolific Warhammer author and game designer. The collaboration of these veteran designers has generated anticipation for the next edition of Konflikt ‘47, which may or may not incorporate the upcoming Bolt Action third edition rules. The project is seen as a revival of the 1990s Warhammer design studio, given the involvement of several key figures from that era.

Luke Crane, known for designing The Burning Wheel and Mouse Guard RPGs, has acquired the rights to Dungeon World from its original creators, Adam Koebel and Sage LaTorra. Crane announced on the Dungeon World+ Discord that he, along with a business partner, purchased the game and is planning a new edition. The first edition of Dungeon World, released in 2012, was highly acclaimed and won several awards, including the 2012 Golden Geek RPG of the Year. Crane, who previously worked at Kickstarter, indicated that his vision for the new edition of Dungeon World includes a thorough edit of the text, improved organization, and updated mechanics. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the game’s accessibility while refining its content. Although it is unclear if Koebel and LaTorra will be involved in the new edition, Crane’s plans suggest a focus on enhancing the game’s core qualities without drastically altering its essence. The update is expected to bring a much-needed refresh to the beloved game while preserving what made it popular in the first place.

Renegade Game Studios has announced the launch of the Welcome to Night Vale RPG, based on the popular podcast of the same name. The crowdfunding campaign will kick off on BackerKit on October 1, 2024. The game was first revealed at Gen Con 2023, offering fans the chance to immerse themselves in the strange and supernatural world of Night Vale. Players can choose between pre-generated characters or create their own citizens to experience the mysterious desert town. Co-creator Joseph Fink expressed his excitement about allowing fans to tell their own stories in the Night Vale universe. Renegade Game Studios has previously released a variety of tabletop RPGs and continues to expand its offerings.

Renowned Warhammer author William King has joined the design team for the alt-history WW2 wargame Konflikt ‘47. Best known for his Gotrek and Felix and Space Wolf series, King brings extensive experience in fantasy and game design. His addition to the team comes as Konflikt ‘47 expands its creative vision with Andy Chambers at the helm. King will contribute to both the rules and lore of the game, infusing his passion for dieselpunk, alternate history, and World War II themes. Warlord Games promises additional high-profile team members will be announced soon.

Alchemy, a platform that offers digital modules for tabletop RPGs, announced that it will no longer provide free PDF downloads of titles purchased through Free League Publishing due to changes in Free League’s policies. Alchemy will continue to support PDF downloads for the next seven days, allowing customers to obtain digital copies of games like Tales from the Loop and Mörk Borg. Alchemy emphasized their commitment to ensuring that customers retain access to their content despite potential future issues with cloud-based services.

Warlord Games has announced that veteran wargames writer Andy Chambers will head the writing and development team for Konflikt ’47. Chambers, known for his work on games like Warhammer 40,000 and Necromunda, will guide the development of the game’s universe, rules, and background. His involvement promises exciting new updates and expansions for the game.

Forbidden Psalm has introduced a new miniatures game called Endless Horrors From Between the Stars, where players control cults attempting to summon cosmic horrors. This game, compatible with MÖRK BORG, features a narrative campaign, solo and co-op rules, and millions of possible horror combinations. The game includes various play modes and a full set of rules in a 160-page book.

Button Shy Games, a small publisher known for its 18-card wallet games, has released The Walking Dead: Surrounded. This cooperative game challenges 1-4 players to survive a zombie apocalypse using a compact, portable format. Players explore, gather resources, and recruit survivors while battling zombies.

Severed Toys and Stockholm Kartell have launched a Kickstarter for MÖRK BORG action figures. These 7-inch, fully articulated figures include variants like Blood Drenched and Glow-in-the-Dark. Each figure comes with unique accessories and a zine by the creators of MÖRK BORG. The campaign has already surpassed its funding goal.

The Weekly LIVE 160 – Judge Dredd Boardgame, Hasbro New Senior VP, Magic: The Gathering Turns 30, Heroscape Pricing and Lego Contest for D&D 50th

Games Workshop’s classic Judge Dredd board game is getting a remake. First released in 1982, Judge Dredd: The Game of Crime Fighting in Mega-City One was designed by Sir Ian Livingstone – co-founder of the Warhammer maker – and put players in the jackboots of Dredd’s fellow judges as they patrolled the streets of Mega-City One in search of perps to arrest. Nice to see something new from Rebellion Unplugged!

Hasbro has named Dan Rawson as its new Senior Vice President for the Dungeons & Dragons brand. Rawson was announced as the new head of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise, filling a role that was posted four months ago. Rawson comes from the tech sector, having worked for Microsoft Dynamics 365 as COO. Oh good. Another Microsoft exec to make D&D more of a subscription service.

To celebrate 30 years of Magic: The Gathering, we knew we had to go big. We had to create an experience for fans new and old that would be worthy of three decades of the original trading card game. We wanted a collectible, commemorative, jaw-dropping, mind-blowing thing that would cement itself in our collective memories as we look toward the next 30 years of Magic. The price tag is $999. Happy frickin’ anniversary.

Beloved miniatures wargame Heroscape is back with a HazLabs crowdfunding project. The $249.99 boxed set called Heroscape: Age of Annihilation, which includes loads of customizable scenery and five playable factions. It will only be produced if the campaign receives 8,000 pre-orders, but if it’s successful, Hasbro’s Avalon Hill imprint plans to bring the franchise back to life with additional releases. If the quality of the Heroquest release is anything to go by, save your money and wait for the tile packs.

LEGO is celebrating 50 years of Dungeons & Dragons. Fans can submit designs inspired by Dungeons & Dragons using LEGO bricks, elements and pieces. The designs will be voted on by both fans and judges from LEGO. The winners will get their designs officially released and receive a little piece of the profits. Keep under the 3,000 piece limit and you are good to go.

The Weekly LIVE 135 – Beyond the Gates of Antares 2E, Hasbro Buys D&D Beyond, Pathfinder 5E, Fearsome Wilderness RPG and 40k Birthday Cards

Beyond the Gates of Antares created by Tim and Rick Priestley and published by Warlord Games is being discontinued. The miniatures will continue to be produced by Skytrex. The game will get a free second edition from the original creators and a new website to support the game separate from Warlord. So players of the game are not being abandoned and thankfully the games remains in the hands of its creators.

Hasbro buys D&D Beyond from Fandom for almost $150 million. This will create more of an ecosystem for Wizards of the Coast to offer digital materials for the game and also collect valuable data from its players. Both the president of Hasbro and Wizards are former Microsoft executives, so this first major purchase of a digital platform is not surprising. D&D Beyond will retain its original management and continue as usual with the only change being the oversight of Hasbro. The only missing piece of the puzzle is a virtual tabletop. Will Roll20 be next?

A quick side note. We missed the news a few weeks back that Paizo will be converting one of their Pathfinder Adventure Paths, Abomination Vaults, for Dungeons and Dragons 5E. Is this just an attempt by Paizo to reach a wider audience and boost the sales of their adventures or does this mean the beginning of the end for Pathfinder? According to Roll20 session data Pathfinder has slipped considerably in recent years with D&D accounting more than 50% of online game sessions.

Fearsome Wilderness is an RPG using the Year Zero Engine about a prison ship that crashes on a densely wooded planet inhabited by unnatural fearsome critters of American lumberjack folklore. The horror is compounded by the fact that waking up from such an extended period of hibernation can do strange things to the mind. A free trial version of the game is available on DriveThruRPG.

Tainted Grail, the boardgame by Awaken Realms, is getting a sequel called Kings of Ruin. The sequel will be crowdfunded on Gamefound, their tabletop funding platform that launched earlier this year. The original game that was released in 2018 the biggest Kickstarter of that year, raising over $6.4 million and is now getting a second edition as part of this release. The new edition of the game promises more refined mechanics and gameplay with additional storylines. Hopefully this will help them establish Gamefound as a legitimate alternative to Kickstarter.

And finally, Games Workshop is partnering with Moon Pig to bring us licensed Warhammer 40k custom birthday cards. Emperor Preserve Us!

The Weekly LIVE 088 – Apple Attacks Itch.io, New Age of Sigmar and Games Workshop Abandons Japan

In the lawsuit between Apple and Epic the Itch.io app for PC that is accessible on the Epic Store was used to attack Epic and the Unspeakable Games that can be downloaded. Games Workshop still thinks a pandemic is a good time to release a new version of their tabletop wargames. Following last years 9th edition of Warhammer 40k, they announced the 3rd edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar at their online Warhammer Fest. In other Games Workshop news they appear to be abandoning Japan and we have the evidence. Will the physical stores remain? What will happen to all the translation and localization? And finally, a product of the lockdowns and the desire to game in the Warhammer Fantasy Battles Old World has led to the discovery of a great community of Warmaster gaming.
