The Weekly LIVE 179 – Year Zero and Dragonbane Licenses, 1st Copy of D&D Ever Sold, Ardlings Fail and Kobold Press Pulling a Paizo

Free League Publishing is releasing two new game licenses for community creators – a Free Tabletop License (FTL) for the Year Zero Engine and a third-party license for the upcoming Dragonbane fantasy RPG. The Year Zero Engine FTL comes with a massively updated Standard Reference Document (SRD). Feedback can be posted on their forum on all three documents before they are finalized and officially launched.

Did Greg Stafford receive the first ever copy of Dungeons and Dragons directly from Gary Gygax?

Dungeons & Dragons’ 2024 Player’s Handbook won’t contain Ardlings. D&D lead rules designer Jeremy Crawford stated that the Ardlings, a proposed species with celestial origins and animal heads, did not test well in the most recent playtest. “There are a lot of fans of the Ardling, but the Ardlings’ time has not yet come.The Ardling is moving out of the playtest for now and maybe in some future year we will return [to them].”

Celeste Conowitch, Kobold Press’s Senior Game Designer posted on their Design Diary that “ It’s Time for the Monopoly on D&D to End… This is a wildly exciting time to make TTRPGs as we stare down the possibility of an RPG future not ruled by one master game under the control of one master company (The Lord of the Rings taught us this is bad)… This game has meant too much to us for too long to let it remain owned by just one company.”

A classic roleplaying game returns. The new retro-apocalypotic edition of Twilight: 2000, published in partnership with Game Designers’ Workshop, goes back to the roots of the franchise with a boxed set for sandbox roleplaying in the devastation of World War III. The new edition will be the fourth in the series, the first being released by GDW in 1984. Just like the original version, the new edition is set in a year 2000 devastated by war – now in an alternate timeline where the Moscow Coup of 1991 succeeded and the Soviet Union never collapsed.

Creators of Dragonlance are developing a new setting called Skyraiders of Abarax. Tracy and Laura Hickman are xreating the awtting using athe 5E SRD and their unique “Living Tome System”. This follows their dropped lawsuit with Wizards of the Coast for non-payment and contract violations. Into the Odd by Chris McDowall is getting a remaster by Free League on Kickstarter. SideQuest hopes to relieve the congestion of ZineQuest and let more creators creating zine based RPGs get attention. Cabinet Group, the rights holder of Conan the Barbarian, Mutant Year Zero and Solomon Kane are being acquired by Norway’s Funcom, develops of the first Conan MMORPG. Idle Red Hands Weekly 027: CMON’s Time Machine, Wendy’s TTRPG and Girl Underground

A slightly more salty weekly episode. CMON holds a stealth garage sale in the guise of a campaign to create soundtracks and artbooks for its games. They are actually clearing out warehouse leftovers from previous campaigns. Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers has released a fantasy TTRPG as a well-designed and illustrated 97-page PDF called Feast of Legends. Critical Role held a sponsored livestream and we are all left wondering “Why?” Chris played a session of Girl Underground by Jesse Ross, creator of Trophy. Also tried the Forbidden Lands RPG by Free League.

The first session of D&D 5E playing the Lost Mines of Phandelver and the excellent utility of the 5E Essentials rulebook. Consent in Gaming by Monty Cooke Games (which is FREE but requires you create an account) and suspicions of their motives as well as the actual good a document like this can do. Bitter Reach is the expansion for the Forbidden Lands RPG by Free League (not Bitterlands as was mysteriously reported previously) along with a reprint of the core set. Alien is not Star Trek and other GMing mistakes in the comments.
