Mantic Games is currently taking pre-orders for two new 10mm armies for the Epic Warpath sci-fi wargame: the Veer-Myn and the Marauders. The Marauder Core Army, provided in high-detailed plastic, brings infantry and armored vehicles like Hammer Assault Tanks, while resin Marauder Reinforcements add heavy firepower, air support, and the massive Wolfcrawler Mech. Similarly, the Veer-Myn Core Army includes burrowing units like Stalkers and Tunnelers, built from ramshackle technology. Veer-Myn Reinforcements add monstrous units such as Brood Guard and Night Terrors, along with the large, weapon-bristling Technonest miniature.

Financially-troubled publisher CMON plans to resume crowdfunding activities in the second half of 2026, following annual losses that soared to $19.9 million in 2025. This recent loss contributed to $23 million in losses across 2024 and 2025, prompting an independent auditor to question the company’s ability to continue as a “going concern”. CMON’s directors maintain that the company is sustainable, citing financial support from directors and proceeds from the sale of its Singapore office and a recent share sale. The company’s liabilities are largely due to eight undelivered crowdfunding campaigns—including DC Super Heroes United and DCeased, now slated for Q4 2026—and five undelivered pre-order campaigns. CMON’s new strategy focuses on reducing large-scale crowdfunding exposure, pivoting toward growth in the Asian market, and maintaining a streamlined operation with a reduced headcount.

Free League announced an expansion of its Free Tabletop License (FTL) to cover five of its core role-playing games: Dragonbane, Forbidden Lands, Symbaroum, Coriolis: the Great Dark, and Coriolis: The Third Horizon. This royalty-free, irrevocable open game license permits third-party creators to publish their own adventures and supplements for these titles. Free League stated that this move will benefit the longevity and popularity of the games and the broader community. Furthermore, the expanded license supports third-party publication not just in English, but also in several other languages, including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, and Portuguese.

Free League Workshop also announced Fomoria RPG, an upcoming folk horror game created in partnership with award-winning designers Tania Herrero and Johan Nohr, the co-creator of MORK BORG. Described as a game of “epic horror,” Fomoria is set in a dark, subterranean world where the sun is a myth and players navigate the “living, breathing labyrinth of shifting tunnels” known as the Strata. The game uses a modified MORK BORG engine and offers options for players to take on the role of subterranean creatures in a world “built of monsters and bones”. The Kickstarter campaign is set to launch soon, but a Quickstart set of rules is currently available, including pre-generated characters and an introductory adventure.

The Weekly Podcast no.293 – CMON Sells Zombicide, Warhammer Down, WotC Help Wanted and New Chaosium CEO

CMON, already facing financial difficulties exacerbated by import tariffs, has sold its flagship Zombicide IP to Asmodee under the Guillotine Games label. This follows CMON’s earlier sale of three other prominent board game lines (Blood Rage, Rising Sun, and ANKH: Gods of Egypt) to Tabletop Tycoon in May, along with staff layoffs and frozen crowdfunding campaigns. The company’s stocks were delisted from the Hong Kong stock exchange after failing to publish accounts on time, showing substantial losses that drained cash reserves.

Games Workshop took the unusual step of deliberately crashing its entire Warhammer.com webstore to prevent bots from bulk-purchasing the limited special edition of the new Horus Heresy book “Era of Ruin.” The company detected scalpers using bots to bypass normal safeguards in real-time and shut down the site globally, pausing the book’s launch entirely. This drastic measure is uncommon for large-scale web stores and demonstrates GW’s commitment to preventing scalping, even at the cost of lost sales and resources.

Following the departures of prominent D&D figures Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins after the launch of revised 5th Edition, Wizards of the Coast is hiring for two high-level positions: a “Principal Game Designer” and a “Head of Game Ecosystem.” These roles, offering $150-200k salaries, represent a corporate, video game-industry-like division of responsibilities where the Principal Game Designer executes product releases while the Head of Game Ecosystem drives long-term vision and rules consistency across all D&D formats.

Chaosium announced significant staff changes, including the appointment of Neil Robinson as CEO and the departure of Executive Producer Mike Mearls to Asmodee after 14 months. Brian Holland has been promoted to Executive Producer for RPGs, while other team members have taken on expanded roles including Jason Durall moving to Basic Roleplaying as creative director and several new hires joining the company. Despite the changes, Mearls will continue working on ongoing projects including the new RuneQuest edition.

Catalyst Game Labs announced $5 increases on Forcepacks and Box Sets, and $1 increases on Salvage Box products due to tariffs. They paid $240,000 in unexpected import taxes in March, with a 30% tariff requiring 10% MSRP increases. RPG sourcebooks remain unaffected due to a 2024 U.S. Customs ruling classifying RPG books as “books” rather than “games” for tariff purposes.

Games Workshop Legal Action: GW filed a sweeping lawsuit against 280 online sellers for Warhammer trademark infringement, freezing assets and business operations. However, they subsequently admitted mistakes and began dismissing cases against sellers who were incorrectly targeted, sending “oops” apology emails to affected businesses.

Tabletop Tycoon Acquisitions acquired five board games from CMON, including three designed solely by Eric M. Lang (Blood Rage, Rising Sun, ANKH: Gods of Egypt) and two co-designed games (Arcadia Quest, Starcadia Quest).

Free RPG Day 2025 is scheduled for June 21st, featuring offerings from major publishers including Free League, Kobold Press, Chaosium, and others. The event will include D&D cartoon character pins, sample products, new adventures, and materials for various game systems.

Neon City Outlaws designed by Rodney Thompson (Lords of Waterdeep, D&D) is launching a cyberpunk RPG Kickstarter campaign through June 12th, 2025. The game uses his 100AC system and features collaborative world-building, body-swapping mechanics, and both individual heist scenarios and larger “Revolution” gameplay phases. The campaign has raised $32,885 of its $40,000 goal with 14 days remaining.

Modiphius has announced the release of the second edition of Star Trek Adventures, a tabletop roleplaying game originally launched in 2017. The new edition, set to launch at Gen Con 2024, includes a core rulebook and expansions. It remains compatible with first edition supplements. The game allows players to explore the Star Trek universe across different eras, featuring original characters and starships. The second edition introduces diversity with playable non-Federation species and expands gameplay possibilities. Modiphius, in collaboration with Paramount Consumer Products, adds content from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Prodigy. The updated 2d20 System rules maintain authenticity and compatibility with previous supplements.

Ultra PRO plans to release Dungeons & Dragons 50th Anniversary accessories, including Heavy Metal Dice, a Dice Tower, and more, celebrating D&D’s milestone year. The accessories feature a golden color theme and will be available in the summer of 2024. 

Paranoia 25th Anniversary Mega Bundle is available through Humble Bundle, offering a comprehensive collection of rulebooks, sourcebooks, and adventures for the darkly comic sci-fi TTRPG. The bundle supports the charity One Tree Planted.

Renowned board game designer Eric Lang, known for titles like Blood Rage and Rising Sun, has collaborated on a new board game called Life in Reterra. Described as a meatier version of Carcassonne, it is set in a post-apocalyptic world where players lead communities in a greener Earth. The tile-laying game supports 2-4 players, with each playthrough taking around 35 minutes. Players acquire and place tiles and buildings within their communities, earning points based on placement and fulfilling specific requirements. The game introduces environmentally sustainable living, reusing discarded items for new infrastructure. Life in Reterra is set to release in the US on June 15th at a retail price of $30, with a European release date pending.

In a groundbreaking move, China’s Guangzhou Internet Court issued the world’s first legally binding verdict on copyright infringement by an AI-generated service. The court ruled against an AI company for infringing on Ultraman’s copyright and adaptation rights during generative AI services, holding it liable for civil damages. The defendant’s AI-generated images substantially copied the original Ultraman work without permission. The judgment emphasized the duty of care for generative AI service providers and specified the need for clear user awareness of copyright risks. The court aimed for a balance between rights protection and industry development, ruling that the defendant compensate the plaintiff 10,000 yuan ($1,389).

Idle Red Hands Weekly 049: Tales From the Loop Boardgame and Series, Warzone is Back, Superman Plays 40k, CMON suspended, Ankh and Frosthaven on Kickstarter

This week we discuss the Tales From the Loop Amazon series and the well-timed Free League boardgame on Kickstarter. Idle Red Hands is producing The Complete Mutant Chronicles, a video lore series about the Mutant Chronicles and Warzone setting. The Professional Nerd, @BryanCPSteele , announced that Res Nova has the license to produce a new edition of Warzone. The Man of Steel, Henry Cavill confirms his love for Warhammer 40k on Instagram. CMON ceases trading on the Hong Kong stock exchange because of “auditing issues”. They also launched a Kickstarter for Ankh: Gods of Egypt, which is third in the series of games by Eric M. Lang, including Blood Rage and Rising Sun. Fantasy Grounds reports a 150% boost in online sessions on their platform. Now maybe the time to see what a virtual tabletop is all about. The sequel to Gloomhaven is also live on Kickstarter. Frosthaven looks to be an equally impressive game and the designer, Isaac Childes, couldn’t deserve another big success more. He runs a great crowdfunding campaign. Here’s hoping things get back to normal soon and these projects go well.
