“Darkness at the Brink of Ohio” is a new solo tabletop roleplaying game designed by Banana Chan. The game follows the transformation of a late-night radio DJ into something horrific and otherworldly. Set in Akron, Ohio, players choose one of three characters (a clinical lab tech, a gas station attendant, or a security guard) as they listen to a horrific event involving DJ Mike from 106.6: The Brink. The game includes a soundtrack released for free on YouTube. Themes in this solo RPG include parasocial relationships and hypervisibility within a small fanbase. The book will be approximately 100-125 pages with a cover illustrated by Michael Croteau.

One More Multiverse, a virtual tabletop app, is closing down after four years. It offered pixel-art sprites and a user-friendly interface for playing RPGs online. The app supported games like Blades in the Dark and Yazeba’s Bed and Breakfast. Despite efforts, sustainability became an issue. Assets and verses created by players will remain accessible for 90 days. The closure announcement precedes the official release date for Yazeba’s. Players have 90 days to download or screenshot their creations. A well-crafted alternative to platforms like Roll20 and D&D Beyond, it’s unfortunate to see it go.

The 2024 edition of Dungeons & Dragons will feature Greyhawk as a sample setting in the Dungeon Master’s Guide. Greyhawk, one of the original D&D campaign settings created by Gary Gygax, will be showcased with a double-sided poster map including the City of Greyhawk and the Flanaess. The setting is presented as a template for Dungeon Masters to create their own worlds, with enough detail to bring Greyhawk to life but also leaving room for customization. The release is part of D&D’s 50th-anniversary celebration, highlighting Greyhawk’s classic fantasy elements and its potential for new adventures. The Dungeon Master’s Guide is set to release on November 12, 2024.

The Savage World of Solomon Kane RPG is based on the works of Robert E. Howard and allows players to embark on adventures as Solomon Kane, a hero battling evil in the 17th century. The game emphasizes themes of good versus evil and encourages gamemasters to create a grim setting where players can fight against darkness. The Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (SWADE) system is used for its simplicity and ease of play. The content for this RPG is Kickstarter Exclusive and will not be available through retail.

Joe Manganiello confirms that the proposed live-action Dragonlance project is not moving forward.

The project faced obstacles, including Hasbro’s sale of eOne studio and the poor performance of a Dragonlance D&D adventure and board game in 2022. Despite positive feedback on the script, efforts to revive the project, including Manganiello’s attempt to buy the rights, have not succeeded, but he remains optimistic about potential future developments.

Wizards of the Coast has announced the return of two popular settings now for 5E. Unfortunately, according to Twitter, Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis, creators of Dragonlance and Jeff Grubb, creator of Spelljammer, were not involved in the announcement and found out at the same time everyone did during the announcement. We talked previously about the lawsuit involving the new Dragonlance novels. It doesn’t make WotC look great to ignore the original creators of these settings. Is this to emphasize a break from the past or a chance to save some money?

During the D&D Direct announcement last week, Modiphius Entertainment had a strange announcement of their own. In an attempt to possible distract from WotC, Modiphius had an hour long livestream announcement that was just a torchlit wall that eventually crumbles after a very long wait with only some slight change in lighting. They revealed their new TTRPG Cohors Cthulhu set in ancient Rome, a spinoff of Against the God Themselves, set in the same universe as Achtung! Cthulhu. I guess they were following the old adage “if you can’t beat ‘em, just be boring and confusing” or something like that.

We finally have a date for the Kickstarter campaign for Warzone Eternal. It will be launching May 17th, but be sure to listen to the entire livestream to make sure that date is correct. We talked with Alex Kanous from Res Nova Games previously about the new game and crowdfunding campaign. This should be a fun game to follow and hopefully a big success on Kickstarter. Hopefully with either the Cardinal’s blessing or the influence of the Dark Symmetry we will see the return of wargaming in the Mutant Chronicles universe.

Finally, there is a new release in Japan a a Swedish TTRPG, Kutulu by Mikael Bergström. Call of Cthulhu is the most popular tabletop roleplaying game in Japan. This is a much more rules light and streamlined d6 system. The insanity mechanic especially stands out as a great innovation to the Lovecraft setting. The Swedish language PDF is available as pay-what-you-want PDF on DriveThruRPG. With a little language software translation magic you can get an idea of how this system works. Hopefully we will see an English language release. Free League are you listening?

Dungeons and Dragons clarifies what is canon and apparently it ain’t Dragonlance. From now on all our new favorite iconic D&D characters will be created live on Twitch. The R. A. Salvatore, creator of Drizzt, admits to being guilty of the fantasy genre’s original sin. The outgoing head of Fantasy Flight Games admits to blindly supporting games with weak expansions and with no plans for a complete experience. Can they do better? Games Workshop Clarifies their intellectual property rules and is doing to their fan animators what we suspected all along. And finally, something heartwarming from the Chinese about the future of tabletop gaming. #Gamesworkshop #dnd #wotc #ffg

The lawsuit for nonpayment is settled by Wizards of the Coast with Gale Force Nine following another settlement of the Dragonlance lawsuit. Is the conspiracy over or just beginning? The 2nd Edition of the One Ring by Free League, previously produced by Cubicle 7, is now on Kickstarter. For context, we take a look at the history of licensed Lord of the Rings TTRPGs.

Games Workshop licensing is now open to proposals for merchandise using the Warhammer IP. This includes crowdfunding those projects on Kickstarter. The authors of the Dragonlance novels, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, are suing Wizards of the Coast due to the breakdown of the revision process for the first draft of the first book of the, now in doubt, next trilogy of novels. Our topic this week is about using horror in your tabletop games. What are the considerations and how should you pace a one-shot or campaign?
