Basic Roleplaying will be one of the first major releases under the Open RPG Creative Licence, with Chaosium saying it had revised the system’s newest edition specifically to cater to use via the new license.The Basic Roleplaying: The Universal Game Engine book will include the system’s core rules for creating characters and progressing them through levels, as well as details on how to handle combat, magic and superpowers, weapons and equipment, vehicles, and more. In keeping with the system’s setting-agnostic core, the rules are designed to be used with the setting or genre of the player’s choice.

Wizards of the Coast and Extra Life partner to #CHANGEKIDSHEALTH Children-designed Magic: The Gathering cards, Dungeons & Dragons products are available for donations to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraising event.

The third part of the cinematic adventure trilogy for the ALIEN RPG is now available to retail. Heart of Darkness is a complete Cinematic Scenario for the ALIEN roleplaying game. It is a stand-alone adventure but also serves as a conclusion to the Draconis Strain Saga begun in the cinematic scenario Chariot of the Gods and continued in Destroyer of Worlds. The Weekly LIVE 153 – Tolkien Gets Embraced, 40th Anniversary Call of Cthulhu Starter Set, DC Comics Deleted and GW Versus Cults 3D

The Embracer Group has acquired the rights to Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. by purchasing Middle Earth Enterprises. This is one of five acquisitions that cost the Swedish company a reported SEK 6 billion ($576 million). Middle Earth Enterprises was a division of The Saul Zaentz Company, which had stewarded the intellectual property rights to author J. R. R. Tolkien’s worlds for more than 50 years. What does this mean for Amazon’s rights and how will this affect the destruction of established characters from this setting?

To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Call of Cthulhu we are getting a new release of the Starter Set. This will include updated booklets and handouts. This set also includes the solo adventure that will teach you the rules of the game in a choose-your-own-adventure style booklet. After the fulfillment of Call of Cthulhu Classic (which is actually second edition) this amazing digital restoration of Call of Cthulhu history should also be available.

Warner Bros. Discovery has removed the “comics” from the DC Comics website. Now the URL is simple DC.com. This may be a product of restructuring and streamlining the properties, but it may also be an indication of a future move where Warner Bros. Discovery holds the license and the comics are created elsewhere. That has always been the biggest difference between Marvel and DC comics. The DC characters all have identifiable and trademarked logos on their chests that probably make as much money in licensing as the comics ever did.

Cults3D has posted a statement about a takedown request they have received from Games Workshop. Cults is a 3D printing marketplace that sells user uploaded STL files and also offer a certain amount for free. 200 models were listed as violating trademarked IP with some of these possible being only filenames. Cults is working with the artists on the website to eliminate the offending names, logos or deigns so that they can be re-uloaded. They are also coming back at GW over the free models, saying that the constitute “fan art” and should be left alone. Cults shared the list of infringing terms that reinforces the GW strategy to de-Tolkien-ize their naming to make it legally defensible in situations exactly like this.

Hasbro and Avalon Hill Games announce the new Age of Annihilation expansion pack for the long-dormant cult classic tabletop title Heroscape. Debuted and distributed by Milton Bradley in 2004, Heroscape was a sort of scaled-down take on wargaming that appealed particularly to younger audiences. Discontinued in 2010, it was recently announced that Heroscape will return in the near future with the Heroscape: Age of Annihilation expansion.

We also review the results of the 2021 Ennies. Thirsty Sword Lesbians took both Product of the Year and Best Games. The path to Middle-earth will soon open for new adventurers.

Free League is thrilled to reveal that the acclaimed second edition of The One Ring™ roleplaying game is coming soon in a 5E adaptation, entitled The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying. The new edition of The One Ring™ RPG, set in the world of The Lord of the Rings™ by J.R.R. The Weekly LIVE 150 – Darkest Dungeon Dispute, RiotOnline Closes, Return to Dark Tower Second Printing and Expansion and Cthulhu App in Japan

The Darkest Dungeon boardgame Wave 1, the English language core game, is printed and ready ship. Unfortunately for Mythic, the company that designed the boardgame, which is based on the PC game by Red Hook Studios, the costs of shipping have dramatically increased. They are now asking backers to contribute a small additional amount to help make up for the $875K difference after they have already added over a million themselves in cooperation with Red Hook. Of course the comments and criticism are flying. This is putting Mythic in a tight spot. These addition costs are unforeseen and as Kickstarter is NOT a preorder, it seems they are justified in asking for this additional funding. It is either that or just dump the whole thing in the China Sea so they can stop paying storage costs.

A surprise message from DriveThruRPG informed us that due to the closure of RiotOnline we are being sent complimentary codes for PDFs of all the materials we had on this digital platform. This situation comes hot on the heels of Astral announcing they are done. RiotMinds is selling their IP catalog to CMON games. This includes Trudvang Chronicles, LexOccultum, and the Ruin Masters brands. Who knows what CMON will do with them. They do have a studio dedicated to TTRPGs so let’s hope for the best.

Restoration Games is returning to their successful reboot of Dark Tower with a seconding printing of Return to Dark Tower. It will also include a new expansion called Covenant that will include new heroes and mechanics. They are already near $1 million on the second printing this time on Backerkit. If you missed it the first time around this gives you a chance to get the game and for those that pledge it offers the chance to get some of the premium upgrades offered in the first Kickstarter campaign.

Finally, Kadokawa the publisher of Call of Cthulhu in Japan has announced a new smartphone app tentatively named Cthulhu Myth TRPG Rulebook PLUS. It will offer for the first time a single place to access all the books produced over the past 40 years for Call of Cthulhu in Japan. It will immediately only be available to iOS on iPhones but that could change depending on popularity. The app allows users to mark pages and add notes. It is free and offers the books as in-app purchases.

The Weekly LIVE 137 – WotC Ignores Original Creators, Modiphius Announces Cohors Cthulhu, Warzone Eternal Kickstarter Launch Date and Kutulu Hits Japan

Wizards of the Coast has announced the return of two popular settings now for 5E. Unfortunately, according to Twitter, Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis, creators of Dragonlance and Jeff Grubb, creator of Spelljammer, were not involved in the announcement and found out at the same time everyone did during the announcement. We talked previously about the lawsuit involving the new Dragonlance novels. It doesn’t make WotC look great to ignore the original creators of these settings. Is this to emphasize a break from the past or a chance to save some money?

During the D&D Direct announcement last week, Modiphius Entertainment had a strange announcement of their own. In an attempt to possible distract from WotC, Modiphius had an hour long livestream announcement that was just a torchlit wall that eventually crumbles after a very long wait with only some slight change in lighting. They revealed their new TTRPG Cohors Cthulhu set in ancient Rome, a spinoff of Against the God Themselves, set in the same universe as Achtung! Cthulhu. I guess they were following the old adage “if you can’t beat ‘em, just be boring and confusing” or something like that.

We finally have a date for the Kickstarter campaign for Warzone Eternal. It will be launching May 17th, but be sure to listen to the entire livestream to make sure that date is correct. We talked with Alex Kanous from Res Nova Games previously about the new game and crowdfunding campaign. This should be a fun game to follow and hopefully a big success on Kickstarter. Hopefully with either the Cardinal’s blessing or the influence of the Dark Symmetry we will see the return of wargaming in the Mutant Chronicles universe.

Finally, there is a new release in Japan a a Swedish TTRPG, Kutulu by Mikael Bergström. Call of Cthulhu is the most popular tabletop roleplaying game in Japan. This is a much more rules light and streamlined d6 system. The insanity mechanic especially stands out as a great innovation to the Lovecraft setting. The Swedish language PDF is available as pay-what-you-want PDF on DriveThruRPG. With a little language software translation magic you can get an idea of how this system works. Hopefully we will see an English language release. Free League are you listening?

As if they listened to last week’s episode, Warner Bros. defends their film right for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. This contradicts the report that the Saul Zaentz Company is meeting with potential buyers. Both parties have ben in meditation for some time concerning profits of the Peter Jackson films. Roll20 gets a new CEO, former Google Exec, Ankit Lal who promises a very deep focus on our users and publishers. Has all their success during the pandemic spoiled them? Do we want on virtual tabletop to pick winners and losers among published titles? Kickstarter announced their are exploring the use of blockchain technology with hopes that it will open access to crowdfunding to countries that were previously excluded. They also recently said they won’t allow NFTs on its blockchain protocol. Modiphius is releasing a incredibly luxurious limited edition of the Dune Imperial Limited Edition core rulebook. Hand-bound leather and limited to 150 numbered copies. Preorders are open now. The Weekly 082: Warframe RPG Cancelled, Auroboros RPG by Warchief and Dante’s Inferno 5E

We discuss the cancellation of the Frame RPG by Spencer Campbell on Kickstarter after the fanbase attacks. The first release by former Blizzard execs, Warchief Gaming, is Auroboros for 5E. Also on Kickstarter to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri, Acheron Books is releasing Dante’s Inferno for 5E. It will include two books, Dante’s Guide to Hell essentially the Player’s Handbook and Virgilio’s Untold Tales which functions as the GM’s Guide and Monster Manual of the setting.
