Pathfinder and Starfinder RPG maker Paizo released the first draft of its Open RPG Creative (ORC) license over the weekend and invited the public to submit their comments. The legal document is months in the work following Wizards of the Coast’s OGL fiasco and subsequent release of their rules into the Creative Commons, but Paizo has decided to blaze a different trail through the thicket of tabletop copyright protection.

Project Black Flag got both an official title and a Kickstarter date this past weekend. Black Flag, if you were unfamiliar, is Kobold Press’ take on “Core Fantasy Gaming” aka their version of the 5th Edition D&D rules, but done independently of WotC and any licensing shenanigans. It was originally announced during the OGL debacle of January 2023.

Dungeons & Dragons is not getting rid of half-elves, despite messaging coming out of a Content Creator’s Summit held at Wizards of the Coast headquarters this week. Today, Wizards of the Coast released a brief statement addressing a “controversy” involving the intention to move away from mechanics that singled out characters with mixed parentages of different species, such as half-elves and half-orcs. “Options for creating characters descended from more than one species are not being removed from Dungeons & Dragons,” said a brief statement posted on Twitter. “Proposed adjustments to character origins have been open to the community since August 2022 and will be revised further.”

Games Workshop’s classic Judge Dredd board game is getting a remake. First released in 1982, Judge Dredd: The Game of Crime Fighting in Mega-City One was designed by Sir Ian Livingstone – co-founder of the Warhammer maker – and put players in the jackboots of Dredd’s fellow judges as they patrolled the streets of Mega-City One in search of perps to arrest. Nice to see something new from Rebellion Unplugged!

Hasbro has named Dan Rawson as its new Senior Vice President for the Dungeons & Dragons brand. Rawson was announced as the new head of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise, filling a role that was posted four months ago. Rawson comes from the tech sector, having worked for Microsoft Dynamics 365 as COO. Oh good. Another Microsoft exec to make D&D more of a subscription service.

To celebrate 30 years of Magic: The Gathering, we knew we had to go big. We had to create an experience for fans new and old that would be worthy of three decades of the original trading card game. We wanted a collectible, commemorative, jaw-dropping, mind-blowing thing that would cement itself in our collective memories as we look toward the next 30 years of Magic. The price tag is $999. Happy frickin’ anniversary.

Beloved miniatures wargame Heroscape is back with a HazLabs crowdfunding project. The $249.99 boxed set called Heroscape: Age of Annihilation, which includes loads of customizable scenery and five playable factions. It will only be produced if the campaign receives 8,000 pre-orders, but if it’s successful, Hasbro’s Avalon Hill imprint plans to bring the franchise back to life with additional releases. If the quality of the Heroquest release is anything to go by, save your money and wait for the tile packs.

LEGO is celebrating 50 years of Dungeons & Dragons. Fans can submit designs inspired by Dungeons & Dragons using LEGO bricks, elements and pieces. The designs will be voted on by both fans and judges from LEGO. The winners will get their designs officially released and receive a little piece of the profits. Keep under the 3,000 piece limit and you are good to go.

We discuss the Lake Geneva Dugeon Hobby Shop museum set to open, or at least get a new parking lot and curator. Also, the list of professionals and events that are distancing themselves from the new TSR grows. Cargo shipping rates are up 300 to 400 percent currently. This is putting pressure on board game companies to shoulder that expense if it is temporary or pass it on to the customers. Probably the likely move. The solution would be stop printing boardgames in China, but why would anyone do that? Finally, for an escape for the ugliness we take a look at Dukk Borg by Gem Room Games and Nerdy Paper Games. A Mork Borg compatible game that combines dark metal and DuckTales. Anything that celebrates death metal aesthetics and Carl Barks influenced duck characters is worth a look.

Unboxing everything from the 2020 Second Edition of Tsukuyumi: Full Moon Down by King Racoon Games. This version replaces the standess with plastic miniatures.
#tsukuyumi #kingracoongames #felixmertikat

Slowly but steadily, the Moon has been approaching the Earth. It has touched the surface and ripped a deep rift across continents, mountain ranges and oceans. It has come to a halt in the now dried-out Pacific Ocean. Chaos and devastation wrecked the Earth and its inhabitants. That chaos grew greater when the Moon revealed itself to be a “kami” (a Japanese God of old) – the white dragon TSUKUYUMI. Exiled into the night sky eons ago, TSUKUYUMI has been roused by Japanese warriors, who tried to rid themselves of their godly creators. TSUKUYUMI’S time for revenge has finally come…

We look at all the games currently available for the Mysthea universe by Tabula Games. This includes the original boardgame from their first Kickstarter, Mysthea, the follow-up, Icaion and the card game, Volfyirion. All sharing a very compelling scifi fantasy setting with amazing artwork by Travis Anderson. First, we look at the art book from the original game that contains the setting lore and illustrations. We also have a quick look at Shattered City, a TTRPG set in Mysthea, by UFO Press, that uses the PbtA ruleset. #mysthea #icaion #volfyirion #tabulagames

IDW Games will no longer publish the Metal Gear Solid boardgame. This means the designer also loses the license for the IP from Konami. This leaves more than 2,000 pre-orders on BackerKit and Amazon in limbo. The Legend of the Five Rings Living Card Game by Fantasy Flight is coming to an end. This doesn’t affect the RPG or novels they will continue to support. Wet Ink Games has released three new dossiers for their weird World War I game, Never Going Home.

We open up a real oddity in the history of the Mutant Chronicles, the 2007 Starter Set for the Collectible Miniatures game by Fantasy Flight Games licensed by Paradox Entertainment. It contains six 54mm pre-painted miniatures and supposedly everything you need to start playing. Rules were co-written by Eric M. Lang so it might be a playable game. The earliest sign of its short lifespan was the switch from blind box booster packs to just straightforward expansion boxes. It only lasted for about two years but is a very interesting attempt to take advantage of the fanbase that existed somewhere between boardgames and wargaming. Join us as we take look inside the box and try to piece together what created this short-lived oddity. In the midst of the Rackham pre-painted trend of AT-43 and Confrontation: Age of Ragnarok, this addition to the Mutant Chronicles series is a real head-scratcher.
