The Weekly LIVE 131 – Alien RPG Tie-in Novels, Return of Gold Box Games, CBR+PNK KS, Kickstarter Record

Free League and Titans Books will collaborate to publish three original novels that are tied into the AlienRPG campaign storylines. This project will be supervised by Andrew EC Gaska the writer of the Alien RPG campaigns. The original Dungeons and Dragons Gold Box games from the 1980s are returning to PC. Relive these classic early PCRPG adventures and their old school settings originally by SSI. Emanoel Melo’s Cyberpunk TTRPG uses a minimalist version of the acclaimed Forged In The Dark system to encourage cinematic action and a spiraling series of consequences and is now on Kickstarter to produce a physical edition. Kickstarter sets a new record for tabletop projects funded in 2021. Plus they are hiring for their community advisory council.

As if they listened to last week’s episode, Warner Bros. defends their film right for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. This contradicts the report that the Saul Zaentz Company is meeting with potential buyers. Both parties have ben in meditation for some time concerning profits of the Peter Jackson films. Roll20 gets a new CEO, former Google Exec, Ankit Lal who promises a very deep focus on our users and publishers. Has all their success during the pandemic spoiled them? Do we want on virtual tabletop to pick winners and losers among published titles? Kickstarter announced their are exploring the use of blockchain technology with hopes that it will open access to crowdfunding to countries that were previously excluded. They also recently said they won’t allow NFTs on its blockchain protocol. Modiphius is releasing a incredibly luxurious limited edition of the Dune Imperial Limited Edition core rulebook. Hand-bound leather and limited to 150 numbered copies. Preorders are open now. And finally a supplement for Free League’s Twilight 2000 fourth edition entitled Friend or Foe that offers 10 extended encounters to add to your campaign. The Weekly LIVE 114: D&D TV Show on G4, New Mutant Chronicles, Reach of the Roach God, Paizo Data Breach and Tribe 8 Bundle

Dungeons and Dragons is coming to television with an official actual play show. It will be streaming on Twitch and the G4 website as well as the G4 cable channel on November 22. Purging of the Crucible is a new adventure available for the 2d20 Mutant Chronicles RPG. It will be available from Modiphius as a PDF and also shortly available as a print on demand 74-page colour softcover book. Southeast Asian tabletop designers and artists, Centaur Games, behind the A Thousand Thousand Islands have launched a Kickstarter for their first full-length tabletop RPG campaign book, Reach of the Roach God. Paizo President apologies for user data breach. Bundle of Holding revives the August 2016 Tribe 8 Bundle, featuring much of the Tribe 8 product line in beautiful new versions from Dream Pod 9.

The Weekly LIVE 103: Tome of Heroes, IP in RPGs, Tiny Library on KS and Blades in the Dark TV Series

Kobold Press collects all of their 5E material into Tome of Heroes. This will give players the choice of 10 new races and 50 subclasses. The new hardcover book is currently on Kickstarter and includes both new and previously published material. Omnichromatic Pirate Unicorn Games has published a guide to Intellectual Property in RPGs. It is currently pay-what-you-want on DriveThruPRG. This is a useful overview of what can be protected and what cannot in the world of RPG design and development. Tiny Library is also currently on Kickstarter. It is an anthology of TTRPGs that can be printed on a single standard size playing card (both sides) and all 50 games can be yours for US$10. John Harper, the creator of the Blades in the Dark RPG, recently tweeted that Warp Films is currently developing a TV series based his RPG setting. Evil Hat Publishes the RPG and no further details have been released regarding dates or platform. There have also been rumors of an Exalted TV series in development based on the RPG of the same name. Is this a new trend in mining ideas for the creatively bankrupt entertainment industry? Are comic books yesterday’s bananas? Remember the Fox TV series based on White Wolf’s Kindred: The Embraced?

Another Unboxing: Mysthea + Icaion + Volfyirion by Tabula Games

We look at all the games currently available for the Mysthea universe by Tabula Games. This includes the original boardgame from their first Kickstarter, Mysthea, the follow-up, Icaion and the card game, Volfyirion. All sharing a very compelling scifi fantasy setting with amazing artwork by Travis Anderson. First, we look at the art book from the original game that contains the setting lore and illustrations. The Weekly 086: Humble Bundle Split Change, Starforged on Kickstarter, Warner Bros. Quits Physical Media and Forbidden Psalm

The three sliders that adjust the revenue split for Humble Bundle disappears. Charities can now only receive a maximum of 15% Ironsworn: Starforged, the scifi stand-alone sequel to Ironsworn, appears on Kickstarter. Jerry Beck, an animation historian, let slip that Warner Bros. appears to be moving away from physical media starting in 2022. That means no more DVD or Blu-ray discs and a pivot toward streaming platforms like their own HBO Max. Is this just for animation or is this the future? What if tabletop RPGs moved away from physical media? Fobidden Psalm is a tabletop 28mm miniatures game inspired and compatible with MÖRK BORG. It is miniatures agnostic and all of the content can also be used in the MÖRK BORG TTRPG. We also discuss the Monster Hunter boardgame by Steamforged Games that just ended on Kickstarter.

Mantic releases second edition public playtest rules for Firefight. Broken Tales by The World Anvil now has an English language quickstart in advance of their May Kickstarter campaign. The Ruins of Symbaroum for 5E is now on Kickstarter bringing the dark fantasy setting by Free League to the world’S greatest roleplaying game. Will it be a good thing for the game by broadening its audience?

The Weekly LIVE 083: San Diego Comic-Con Cancelled, Marvel Signs with Penguin Random House and Kickstarter Manager Resigns

After some technical difficulties, we discuss San Diego Comic-Con 2021 being inevitably cancelled following the cancellation of their WonderCon. They will hold  Comic-Con@Home on July 23rd-25th and also announced Comic-Con Special Edition. Special Edition is a scaled-down version of the live event scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend. Should be interesting. Marvel Comics announced they will be ending their 27 year-old exclusive relationship with Diamond Distributors. They signed a new exclusive world-wide deal with Penguin Random House. Later on the day of this announcement Diamond Distributors sent a letter to comic retailers telling them that they will still be carrying Marvel books. A non-exclusive exclusive deal? Your guess is as good as ours. Also, after fallout of the cancellation of the Perfect RPG Kickstarter, Luke Crane will be departing his position at Kickstarter as community head. Finally, we discuss the evolution of the GM from their tribal beginnings to the more recent role of another kind of player, inspired by the article at Cannibal Halfling Gaming.
