In July, Roll20 and DriveThruRPG announced they come together under Ankit Lal. Don’t call it a merger; call it a joint venture. The two have been pretty much operating in unison for the last few months, and now marketplaces for digital content are getting closer together.At the time it was announced that the community content program that OneBookShelf, the DriveThruRPG parent company, has with Wizards of the Coast would expand to include Roll20.Right now, third-party publishers who follow the rules can create and sell D&D adventures and other content from the DMsGuild. As of this week, those modules can also be created for Roll20.

Role’s co-founder isn’t worried about D&D’s plans for the online RPG space. CEO and co-founder Elle Dwight offered two polite reminders that Role, the streaming roleplay platform she co-founded and runs, is not a virtual tabletop but a toolset for “conversation gaming”. After crowdfunding $106,982 on Kickstarter in 2020, Role has been successfully simmering among the actual play and online RPG space. That scene is quickly expanding, though. Wizards of the Coast announced its own plans for a dedicated, in-house virtual tabletop for Dungeons & Dragons earlier this year, and smaller companies such as One More Multiverse, Foundry and even Roll20 are renegotiating what exactly they can offer players who suddenly find themselves with a wealth of options when it comes to playing games digitally with friends.

When you think of Dungeons and Dragons, the world’s most popular RPG, you might think of heroic orcs, magical elves, or Tieflings running an inn somewhere. But you might not have thought that the tabletop game of fantasy adventures is a game in need of a recurrent spending environment. And you’d be forgiven too. Because unless you’re a WotC or Hasbro executive, odds are really good you’ve never thought the words “D&D under-monetized” before.According to an investor-focused “fireside chat” with Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks, and WotC’s new CEO Cynthia Williams, D&D is under-monetized.

The Weekly LIVE 169 – Modiphius Loses Conan, Gloomhaven TTRPG, Hellboy RPG by Nightfall and Android: Run the Citadel

After releasing the Mutant Chronicles license following the delayed Siege of the Citadel boardgame production, they are now releasing the Conan the Barbarian license and Monolith, makers of the Conan boardgame, are picking it up. What does this mean for the role-playing game? Will we see a new ruleset?

Last year Cephalofair announced plans to crowdfund a fantasy miniatures line to complement our catalog of boardgames – providing highly detailed sculpts for each of our in-game enemies, bosses, and summonable creatures typically represented by 2D cardboard standees and tokens. Now, we’re excited to reveal that we’re planning so much more than just miniatures with our brand new product—Gloomhaven: The Roleplaying Game!

Nightfall Games have partnered with Mantic to produce the Hellboy RPG. The 5e-powered tabletop RPG will be available from Nightfall at Dragonmeet this weekend, along with the dice and GM screens. The PDFs of the game will move to Nightfall’s virtual shelves at DriveThruRPG. Nightfall will create a discounted Hellboy RPG bundle and work with Mantic Games on new Hellboy RPG products. The companies will also combine forces on the upcoming Korhonen series, B.P.R.D. cases written by Benn Graybeaton and previous Hellboy RPG contributors.

CMON are going to be exploring the world of Android with a new graphic novel and also a range of miniatures that can be used with their board game collection. At the heart of the upcoming releases is Android: Run The Citadel which is a 120-page graphic novel where the Netrunner known as Chaos Theory has to hack a secure data system and solve the mystery of her friend’s death. This is an interesting collaboration between Fantasy Flight Games and Asmodee alongside the folks from CMON. The story comes from Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing with art by Guilherme Balbi. As well as the new graphic novel, pre-orders will also get access to the Run The Citadel miniatures which can be used in your CMON Games.

The 30-year Magic: The Gathering anniversary edition box, priced at $999, has been a hot topic in the Magic community. Players and collectors were upset at the price point of non-tournament legal proxy cards, especially with there being very low odds of even cracking a Power Nine card within one of the four booster packs. Even top streamers from outside the MTG community like MoistCr1tikal jumped into the conversation over the weekend, calling the sale “not cool.”

Z2 has announced “Amon Amarth: The Great Heathen Army”, a new graphic novel and board game collaboration celebrating the heavy metal quintet’s last album of the same name. Channeling the thunderous epic poem winding through these nine tracks, the graphic novel dives into the heart of the Viking Age, as oars propel longships to shores awaiting the brutal collision of steel and bone.

Turnip28 is a post-apocalyptic vegetable wargame. Players command Regiments of fantastic miniatures made up of incompetent Snobs, bedraggled Followers and bizarre war machines. You will weep. Free League Publishing announced this morning that they would officially release Blade Runner – The Roleplaying Game on December 13th. After having a successful Kickstarter campaign and promoting the game for the majority of 2022, we’re finally getting the Core Rules book, as well as the Starter Set, which comes with a ton of materials for those who really want to get a game rolling with everything you could ever need. More content is set to come out for it in 2023, but for now, these are the basics on which you can get a campaign set up.

Hasbro said its board has authorized a sale process for the part of its eOne TV and film business not directly supporting its branded entertainment strategy following a review of the business initiated by new CEO Chris Cocks.The company has retained J.P. Morgan and Centerview Partners to move ahead with the sale process for a 6,500+ content library; the non-Hasbro branded film and scripted TV business which produces and finances content like The Woman King, Yellowjackets and The Rookie franchise; Hasbro’s interest in Entertainment One Canada Limited’s Canadian film and TV business; and Hasbro’s unscripted division, which includes the Naked & Afraid franchise.

Card Conjurer was a tool for entering any text and art into a Magic: the Gathering card frame and generate a card image. The site did not have any monetization of any kind, and was not a storefront, just a creative tool. Nothing Card Conjurer did was impossible in something like GIMP or Adobe Photoshop, it was just easier. It was first created several years ago by a then-high-schooler, Kyle Burton, who taught himself to code using the project. Wizards of the Coast recently sent a cease and desist to the creator and the tool is now offline.

Despite reportedly making more money than ever before, MTG fans haven’t been too pleased with the state of the game recently. In recent years, Wizards of the Coast has been releasing more and more products than ever before. Typically this kind of exceptional growth would have fans tremendously excited. MTG players, however, have heavily criticized Hasbro for this approach as they’re being overwhelmed by new content. Even MTG’s original creator recently jumped aboard this bandwagon, decreeing that Hasbro pushed their game down the wrong path. Things have now gone from bad to worse for Hasbro. In a new report, the Bank of America has accused Hasbro of “killing its golden goose,” Magic: the Gathering. Identifying the pressing concerns of MTG players, this report has already caused Hasbro’s stock to dip 5.2%. Unfortunately for Hasbro, according to Analysts, things are only going to get worse in the future.

Wizards of the Coast has responded to rumors of changes to the Open Game License and System Reference Document as it works on a new edition of Dungeons & Dragons. For weeks, rumors have swirled about the future of two documents critical to the publication of third-party material for Dungeons & Dragons. The Open Game License and the accompanying System Reference Document allows third-party publishers (ranging from companies like Paizo or Kobold Press to self-publishing creators) to publish and sell material that uses 5th Edition rules. The Open Game License acts as a public copyright license, while the System Reference Document specifies which rules and game mechanics can be used when making third-party material.

Free League Publishing revealed this week they would be publishing a brand-new tabletop RPG based on The Walking Dead. The official name of the game will be called The Walking Dead Universe, where, as you might have guessed, your characters will be thrown into an unforgiving post-apocalyptic sandbox setting where they will have to bond quickly and learn how to survive and thrive in a world filled with the undead. This is not a game where you just happen to run into famous characters from the series and roll with them, or have them at your disposal. You’ll have to survive as a group of original characters created by the players in a setting created by the GM. The game will launch sometime in the Fall of 2023.

Wargames Atlantic has many highly detailed plastic box sets (37 and counting) They have just announced Atlantic Digital. This new program will release a mix of new products for all 11 of their current ranges (9 historical ranges, Classic Fantasy, and Death Fields). These products will be spread across the following categories: full multi-part sets, character figures, conversion parts for existing plastic sets, terrain, and vehicles. The STLs files will be released via a MyMiniFactory Tribe with a monthly membership Individual STL files and file sets sold via MyMiniFactory and soon on their website Physical manufactured models through Only-Game. Melsonian Arts Council has announced a new softcover sourcebook as part of a crowdfunding campaign that offers curious newcomers one of the best ports of entry into the science-fantasy game of decidedly British absurdism and adventure. The softback edition also function as a fold-out facilitator screen during play. The text of the rules will be nestled on the right-hand side, while all other real estate will contain graphs, tables and rules reminders.

Wizards of the Coast may be outlawing third-party homebrew content in its upcoming evergreen edition. This unconfirmed rumor would mean players would be unable to legally publish homebrew content for One D&D. According to the leak, Wizards of the Coast does not plan on using the Open Game License to create a new free-to-access Systems Reference Document for One D&D. If Wizards of the Coast were to discontinue the OGL, players would not be able to legally publish third-party homebrew using the One D&D ruleset.

Wizards of the Coast has a new process for reviewing their material before it’s published. According to a new blog post from Chris Perkins, the D&D Studio is in the process of changing its review process, after fans raised concerns about offensive material present in Spelljammer: Adventures from Space.

Archon Studios is crowdfunding a board game based on the 1999 Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia PC game. The Polish studio has a record of successfully crowdfunding miniatures-heavy board games from both licensed IPs and original properties. The list of video games made into board game continues to grow.

The Weekly LIVE 165 – Star Wars: Shatterpoint Skirmish Game, Regency Cthulhu Expansion by Chaosium, Heroscape Return in Doubt and Edgerunners in Cyberpunk RED

Star Wars Skirmish is a new Star Wars miniatures skirmish game coming next year. Atomic Mass Games, the Asmodee Studio that currently produces the Star Wars: Legion and Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures tabletop games, have announced this new skirmish game featuring iconic characters from the Star Wars universe. The game will be released in June 2023 and will be released alongside existing Star Wars products. Players will build a strike team of characters, such as Ahsoka Tano and Bo-Katan Kryze or Lord Maul, and have them compete in battles with evolving mission objectives.

Regency Cthulhu by Chaosium is a new sourcebook for the popular Call of Cthulhu RPG. And it does exactly what it says on the tin. The world of Regency England—and specifically here, Jane Austen’s England, which was society through a bitingly satirical lens—is about to be full of monsters from the mythos.Call it Shoggoths and Sensibility. Or Persuasion (by elder powers to hasten the destruction of all you know and hold dear). But maybe buckle a brace of pistols over your waistcoat, because Regency England is beset by horrors.

Heroscape’s return is in doubt. Its Hasbro Pulse campaign captured a burst of backers thanks to the dedicated community that has sustained itself over Heroscape’s nearly twelve-year hiatus, but the momentum died almost immediately. Only 3,400 backers have pledged Age of Annihilation’s $250 box.The project needs to surpass 8,000 purchases, or $2 million in promised funding, by November 15th to convince Hasbro it deserves to exist. Their current focus on their big cash cows of Magic: the Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons means Heroscape will not be coming back any time soon.

A new starter set allows you to play Edgerunners from the popular Netflix series in Cyberpunk RED. The Cyberpunk Edgerunners Mission Kit runs on the Cyberpunk RED rpg ruleset. Cyberpunk RED is the latest iteration of the original Cyberpunk RPG, going all the way back to the days of 1988. Now, the new starter box has an updated look for even the days of the RED. This feels like the “bridge” between the Night City of 2045 (the time of the Red) and the “now” of Night City in 2077. The set will include lore and rules to bring the setting and game up to the timeline from the anime by Trigger Studios and the console/PC game by CD Project Red.

The Weekly LIVE 164 – Vallejo Sabotages Army Painter, Hasbro Dicelings, Mantic App Launches and D&D on ESPN

Juan Hidalgo at Vallejo may have sabotaged the release of Army Painter Speedpaint by “inventing” a reactivation issue. Content he made about alternatives to Games Workshop’s Contrast Paints inaccurately demonstrates SpeedPaint and another alternative from Green Stuff World. This just happened to coincide with his work on Vallleojo’s own version of the single coat paint. If true, this is a dirty trick and should be called out. It needs to be very clear when content creators are using their audience and reach to promote a product for profit while falsely denigrating the competition.

Along with the first wave of official D&D action figures from the upcoming movie “Thieves Among Us”, Hasbro has just announced Dicelings. These are oversized D20s with unique rune, feather, or scale theming. They change into one of four iconic monsters; a Beholder, an Owlbear, a Black Dragon, or a classic Red Dragon. Dicelings will retail for $13.99 and due to arrive March 1, 2023. The 50th anniversary thing is shaping up to be quite a thing.

The Mantic Companion App Launches for Kings of War, Deadzone and Firefight. It will include an Army List Builder, Mathhammer (a damage output vs. points cost calculator), Living Rulesets, a Tournament Companion, Game Hub, Club Finder and Worldwide Rankings. Kyle from Master Crafted even mentioned the S-word, STLs. This is available to everyone for FREE until January 31st 2023. Using a special code you will have access to the full features of the Companion app for three months.

This past weekend, Sportscenter on ESPN ran a four-minute-long segment on Dungeons & Dragons in the Cleveland Browns. The gaming group is called the Heathens consisting of Johnny Stanton IV, former fullback on the Browns, as DM, and Myles Garrett and Wyatt Teller, current Browns players. They struck up a conversation about D&D when one of the players wore a Stranger Things t-shirt in the locker room. All this tabletop distraction may help to explain why Cleveland continues to struggle in the AFC North.

Wizards of the Coast and Extra Life partner to #CHANGEKIDSHEALTH Children-designed Magic: The Gathering cards, Dungeons & Dragons products are available for donations to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraising event.

The third part of the cinematic adventure trilogy for the ALIEN RPG is now available to retail. Heart of Darkness is a complete Cinematic Scenario for the ALIEN roleplaying game. It is a stand-alone adventure but also serves as a conclusion to the Draconis Strain Saga begun in the cinematic scenario Chariot of the Gods and continued in Destroyer of Worlds. The scenario is designed for 3–5 players plus the Game Mother and is a spiraling descent into soul-crushing madness.

With the virtual convention Roll20Con wrapping up this weekend, there’s still time to grab the free offerings from the convention on the Roll20 Marketplace. The Weekly LIVE 162 – Paizo PDFs Price Increase, Assassin’s Creed TTRPG by CMON, New Heroquest Hero Collection Expansion, Magic’s Universes Beyond and Mutant Year Zero Skirmish Game

Paizo will be raising its PDF prices following an increase in labor to produce them. Previously they just priced PDFs at flat percentage of the print books MSRP. The price increase seems modest and for some things, like flip mats, the price is actually going down in some cases. With the new found popularity of VTTs and nicer displays on tablets to read PDFs it seems inevitable to try to make more profit from the easier to produce digital products. We will see who else follows suit.

CMON is producing an Assassin’s Creed TTRPG based on the 15 year old video game. The game will involve playing both Descendants, the modern day characters and Ancestors, the assassins of the Brotherhood from various historical periods. This is done by using a virtual reality technology called the ANIMUS that taps into the genetic information in your DNA to access your Ancestors lives. It was a cool concept for a game and if done right may be really fun on the tabletop. The development is being overseen by the talented Francesco Nepitello for Guillotine Press, the CMON RPG studio.

Heroquest is getting a Hero Collection Expansion. The Rogue Heir of Elethorn, a nimble elf skirmisher. This set includes two miniatures (possibly a single character gender swapped) and cards. It retails for a hefty US$17 and I would call that overpriced just based on the quality of the Heroquest base game. At least they are supporting the game with new expansions.

Magic: the Gathering Universes Beyond is a “success” but annoying series for many serious MtG players. It involves reskinning cards using various popular IPs. The first of these being the Walking Dead television series. The series relies on FOMO, but has offered reprints. The main attraction to players seems to be the desirable cards and not the IPs themselves. Look forward to Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar, Lord of the Rings and other odd fits into the collectible card game system.

Free League is releasing a miniatures skirmish game based on the Mutant Year Zero TTRPG called Zone Wars. Games Workshop designer Andy Chambers, known for Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Necromunda and Battlefleet Gothic and Tomas Härenstam, designer for Mutant: Year Zero and the studio’s Alien: The RPG. You can use your characters from the TTRPG in the skirmish game and also play out the aftermath of the skirmish game in the TTRPG. Brilliant! Really looking forward to this.

Asmodee Digital rebrands itself as Twin Sails Interactive. With the help of the Embracer Group they plan to leverage their licensed IPs to produce AA console games as well as mobile and PC offerings beyond the digital boardgames they have mde up until now. Good luck.

The second printing of the Lost Dungeons of Tonisborg hardcover module is on Kickstarter. This is a chance to get a rare piece of TTRPG history. Tonisborg is a 10-level megadungeon, thought to be lost, reproduced with care along with a playable old school game system. Renegade Game Studios has announced that they are in negotiations to expand their licensing relationship with Hasbro, a global branded entertainment company, to include best-selling games Axis & Allies, Diplomacy, Squad Leader, and Robo Rally. Hasbro has has success with their reboot of Heroquest and are also currently crowdfunding a new Heroscape expansion. How long will they be able to farm our nostalgia? Place you bets.

A new documentary covering the creation, lifetime and recent popularity surge of Dungeons & Dragons has been announced by Hasbro’s Entertainment One division. Veteran Critical Role player and actor Joe Manganiello will co-direct the as-yet untitled feature. This is just in time for the 50th anniversary, like everything else from WotC we have talked about this year. Brace yourselves.
