Pathfinder and Starfinder RPG maker Paizo released the first draft of its Open RPG Creative (ORC) license over the weekend and invited the public to submit their comments. The legal document is months in the work following Wizards of the Coast’s OGL fiasco and subsequent release of their rules into the Creative Commons, but Paizo has decided to blaze a different trail through the thicket of tabletop copyright protection.

Project Black Flag got both an official title and a Kickstarter date this past weekend. Black Flag, if you were unfamiliar, is Kobold Press’ take on “Core Fantasy Gaming” aka their version of the 5th Edition D&D rules, but done independently of WotC and any licensing shenanigans. It was originally announced during the OGL debacle of January 2023.

Dungeons & Dragons is not getting rid of half-elves, despite messaging coming out of a Content Creator’s Summit held at Wizards of the Coast headquarters this week. Today, Wizards of the Coast released a brief statement addressing a “controversy” involving the intention to move away from mechanics that singled out characters with mixed parentages of different species, such as half-elves and half-orcs. “Options for creating characters descended from more than one species are not being removed from Dungeons & Dragons,” said a brief statement posted on Twitter. “Proposed adjustments to character origins have been open to the community since August 2022 and will be revised further.”

The Weekly LIVE 185 – Wyrmwood Accusations, Creator Summit, Zombicide: White Death and OMM VTT Bundle

Luxury gaming table manufacturer Wyrmwood Gaming has been accused of creating a “dangerous” environment for its workers in a new report from technology website Gizmodo. Reporter Linda Codega spoke with around 50 current and former employees to uncover a what they describe as a culture of sexual harassment, workplace misconduct, and sexism — led by co-founder and CEO Doug Costella, who is at the forefront of several allegations.

This past weekend, the D&D Creator Summit saw content creators/influences and publishers from across the community attend WotC’s influencer event. According to play-by-plays of folks attending, one of the continuing refrains at play was that One D&D was definitely not a new edition. Instead, the term refers to a new Player’s Handbook that’s coming out in 2024. And, sure, it will completely reimagine the core classes of the game. And yes, multiple core rules will be updated. Fundamental things about the way the game plays are going to be altered or updated.But it’s not a new Edition. It’s not even 5.5.

The Weekly LIVE 184 – BattleTech Mercenaries Hits $4.6 Million, Joe Manganiello’s Dragonlance, Year Zero Licenses Released and Terminator 2 Sourcebook

The next chapter of BattleTech’s titanic resurgence is the Mercenaries Kickstarter campaign and has hit $4.6 million as of this writing. The new campaign introduces more than 50 new designs, including ’Mechs, armored and support vehicles, a VTOL, additional battle armor, and a new aerospace fighter–all to the same high-quality standards and is ready to play right out of the box.

During the recent D&D Direct, Manganiello offered a brief update on the documentary he’s filming for Wizards of the Coast to celebrate Dungeons & Dragons’ 50th Anniversary. Before diving into it, he took a moment to acknowledge how the game had informed his love of stories. Then, Manganiello revealed that it led to his working with Wizards of the Coast on a live-action television adaptation of the Dragonlance novels, which he loves. The Dragonlance novels were initially written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, though many other authors have written stories for the series since.

Free League Publishing today officially released their two new open game licenses for community creators: a Free Tabletop License (FTL) for the Year Zero Engine and a third-party license for their upcoming fantasy RPG Dragonbane. The Year Zero Engine FTL comes with an updated Standard Reference Document (SRD). All three documents are now available for creators to use.

The Terminator 2: Judgment Day sourcebook for the Terminator RPG adds stats for the liquid metal T-1000, as well as allowing players to play as reprogrammed T-800 models on the side of the human resistance – similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s heroic android. As in the original Terminator RPG and its campaign book based on the first movie, players can also just play as bog-standard humans faced with the threat of robotic terminators. Those resistance troops now include an elite force of Time Displacement Commandos who hop between the game’s settings of the 1980s, 1990s and the Future War in an attempt to bring down Skynet.

One of last year’s best DnD books, Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel, has been nominated for a Nebula sci-fi award, in the Game Writing category, where it sits alongside fellow finalists Elden Ring and Stray.

Sandy Pug Games’ HELLPIERCERS Kickstarter campaign has reached its funding goal of $29,000 with 25 days still remaining. The campaign is set to end on April 8, 2023, and backers can look forward to an exciting tactical Hell-slaying action game with base building, overwhelming build options, and map-based strategy.

An upcoming TRPG, The Walking Dead Universe Roleplaying Game sees players attempting to survive in the world of the television series, The Walking Dead, which is based on the graphic novel series from Image Comics. A crowdfunding campaign for the new tabletop RPG is currently live on Kickstarter, with the description for the title revealing more details about how it will play and what kind of features it will contain.

Dinoberry Press is releasing a new tabletop RPG titled “You’re In Space And Everything’s Fucked”. Based on the horror of video games like Dead Space and movies like Alien. Their Kickstarter campaign has just pushed through their goal of $28,400, with three weeks left to back the game.

Wasteland Warfare is a skirmish game based on the Fallout video game series, pitting players against each other – or AI enemies in its solo and co-op modes – in the post-apocalyptic universe using small handfuls of models.

Games Workshop Starts Trial to Recycle Old Warhammer Models and More Starting with a limited trial of 28 UK stores, the initiative for hobbyists to safely scrap Warhammer sprues, models, and paint pots could roll out worldwide.

Corvus Belli, the renowned manufacturer of miniatures, has recently announced the addition of a new material to their range of miniature production. The company has been experimenting with plastic resin, a mixture of resin and PVC, and has decided to partner with external supplier Unicool to bring this material to the market. The company has been testing this new material for several months and is excited to introduce it to its customers.

Free League Publishing revealed the latest expansion coming to their Lord Of The Rings TTRPG, The One Ring Roleplaying Game, coming out later this year. The expansion is called Tales From The Lone-Lands, and has been beautifully illustrated into a hardback compendium, which will contain six brand-new adventures for you to play as lone adventures, string together, or placed within your own campaign. All are set in the lone-lands of north-western Middle-earth, with players encouraged to assume that the time frame still fits around the main campaign in the years around 2965.

The Weekly LIVE 180 – No Dark Sun 5E, Runequest Returns to Japan, Black Chrome for Cyberpunk Red and Starfinder Enhanced

Dungeons & Dragons executive director Kyle Brink spoke with the “Bob the WorldBuilder” YouTube channel, continuing a series of appearances to rehabilitate D&D’s image in the wake of the OGL controversy. During the interview, Bob asked about the prospect of a Dark Sun revival, a dark post-apocalyptic setting that focused on scarce resources and moral ambiguity.

FrogGames announced a forthcoming new licensed Japanese edition of RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha, the mythic fantasy RPG created by Greg Stafford and first published by Chaosium in 1978. Hobby Japan translated and sold a portion of RuneQuest 3rd Edition from 1987 to 1994. At the time, the game was even more popular in the Japanese market than Dungeons & Dragons and it still has many fans in Japan and abroad. FrogGames’s announcement has been well-received by TTRPG fans in Japan.

Paizo announced Starfinder Enhanced on social media and its official website February 28th, saying the 192-page hardcover book will contain “totally revised fundamentals” alongside new systems player options. The studio put specific emphasis on the revised core classes – Envoy, Solarian, Technomancer and Witchwarper – which have been fundamentally rebalanced for ease of play and to bring them more in line with design sensibilities reflected in the more recently published classes.

Free League Publishing is releasing two new game licenses for community creators – a Free Tabletop License (FTL) for the Year Zero Engine and a third-party license for the upcoming Dragonbane fantasy RPG. The Year Zero Engine FTL comes with a massively updated Standard Reference Document (SRD). Feedback can be posted on their forum on all three documents before they are finalized and officially launched.

Did Greg Stafford receive the first ever copy of Dungeons and Dragons directly from Gary Gygax?

Dungeons & Dragons’ 2024 Player’s Handbook won’t contain Ardlings. D&D lead rules designer Jeremy Crawford stated that the Ardlings, a proposed species with celestial origins and animal heads, did not test well in the most recent playtest. “There are a lot of fans of the Ardling, but the Ardlings’ time has not yet come.The Ardling is moving out of the playtest for now and maybe in some future year we will return [to them].”

Celeste Conowitch, Kobold Press’s Senior Game Designer posted on their Design Diary that “ It’s Time for the Monopoly on D&D to End… This is a wildly exciting time to make TTRPGs as we stare down the possibility of an RPG future not ruled by one master game under the control of one master company (The Lord of the Rings taught us this is bad)… This game has meant too much to us for too long to let it remain owned by just one company.”

The Weekly LIVE 178 – Role VTT on Mobile, Demiplane Nexus for Indie 5E, Black Flag Playtest #1, Broken Weave by Cubicle7 and Tales From the Loop Expansion

Role has been actively adding new games to its catalog of digital offerings focusing on small to mid-sized games. There are popular branded TTRPGs like Dune: Adventures in the Imperium and common favorites like Masks: The Next Generation. Indie darlings like Lancer and Mörk Borg are also fully supported, meaning there are pre-made digital character sheets and game rooms created to help facilitate gameplay. There is also the option to create your own game within the framework, or put your own game up on the site for purchase via Role’s quickly-expanding creator’s program. Role has worked on its own game, Chrome, a cyberpunk RPG based on the Panic Engine, which is fully digital. All of this will be supported on mobile.

Demiplane is working on a new set of digital tools to ease the burden of playing tabletop RPGs online that scrubs as much of Dungeons & Dragons’ recent stink off as possible. Called NEXUS, the toolset trades Wizards of the Coast’s name recognition for shining light on independent publishers.

The [Core Fantasy Roleplaying] is backward-compatible with 5th edition and can be used in conjunction with any existing 5E material. Since this document does not include class options— which will start rolling out in Playtest Packet #2—creating a complete character from scratch using the rules found in this packet will require the use of an existing 5E base class.
